A late Iron Age or Roman copper-alloy toggle. The item comprises an incomplete cylindrical body with an integral loop extending from the side. It is unclear whether the body was once fully rounded; the perimeter of the body is incomplete at both ends, and also along the underside. A reddish patina is present across much of the exterior and loop, and also notably on the interior of the tube. The circular loop is sub-oval in section. The length of the tube is 23mm and its diameter is 15mm. The thickness of the tube wall tapers from 4mm where it meets the loop, to 3mm at the break. Th…

An Iron Age silver unit of uncertain type, probably dating to the period c. 100 BC - AD 43. Obverse type is blank. Reverse type depicts a horse right with large pellet eye and single large pellets for nostrils. Above, a stylised Victory holding a wreath(?), below a pellet ring, all within a pellet border. Although no close parallel has as yet been identified for this coin, it is possibly an imported silver unit from continental Gaul. The reverse type shares similarities with the 3rd-3nd century BC drachms from the Bridiers hoard (e.g. Delestree and Tache, 2007: cf. nos. DT 3294-329…

A Iron Age copper alloy La Tene I brooch, dating to c 400-200 BC. The brooch is nearly complete, although the pin and some of the spring are missing. The brooch has a deeply C-shaped bow which is thicker towards the middle where it is of oval section. The bow thins to either side of the curve; at the top it forms an incomplete coil set around a horizontal bar. At the bottom it curves upwards to form a foot. The foot terminates with an oval swelling. A catchplate extends from the side of the foot, somewhat in the form of a narrow wing. Cf Hattatt, R, 2007, A Visual Catalogue of …

Treasure reference no. 2015 T252: two late Iron Age silver coins. Both are southern Gaulish 'monnais-a-la-croix' in languedoc style. Both were found in the plough-zone, approximately 50m apart along the same plough-furrow. These coins were produced in the Languedoc region of southern France in the second century BC and are, as such, usually attributed to the Volcae Arecomici (and/or Volcae Tectosages). There are very rare finds in this country and fewer than 10 of these coins have been found in Britain. See GLO-DB0008 and GLO-0C12F8 for other examples recorded on PAS. Catalogue …

A late Iron Age 'Gallo-Belgic' Aa class 4 gold quarter stater (cf Sills 2003 279, p.132[1]). Diameter: 14mm; weight: 1.55g. Coins of this type were struck in the Somme valley area of N.W. France in the mid-2nd century BC. They are traditionally attributed to the Ambiani but are more commonly found in Essex and Kent; it has been suggested that this particular type was made for export to Britain. Reference Sills 2003. A late Iron Age gold quarter-stater attributed to the Corieltavi. This type of coin is known as a 'scyphate'. Obverse: abstract boar right Reverse: large reversed 'S' with pellet in ring terminals, five pointed star with pellet centre to left and right, crescents above and below. The coin is flatter than most scyphates, which are usually dished. It is unclear whether this is an original feature or due to post-depositional factors. This coin is probably a variant of ABC 1770/Hobbs 3178ff.
