A fragment of solid gold rod, possibly part of a torc of Iron Age date, about 350 - 50 BC, but not conclusively so. The object is likely to be over 300 years old.
The fragment is a short length of solid gold rod, of oval cross-section, and slightly curved. One flat end appears complete.; it is smooth, but is angled across the rod and is slightly concave. The other end is cut half way through with a shap instrument such as a chisel, and then torn/broken across the thinnest point. A gold Iron Age coin; a South Ferriby Stater, a North Eastern coin attributed to the Corieltauvi, probably dating from 50 BC - 20 BC (Haselgrove Period II, Phase 6). Compare ABC, p. 92, no. 1743. The centre of the coin is a coppery colour on both faces. It is probably made from a copper-rich alloy of gold. The flan is oval so any design under the horse is missing. The coin is 19.3mm diameter, 3.4mm thick and 5.39g.

An Iron Age gold coin; a stater, an addendum to the 1998 Silsden Hoard (IARCH-9C03F0). The stater is a coin of the Eastern Region / Catuvellauni and Trinovantes struck under Cunobelinus (about AD 8 - 41), Cunobelinus Linear X-type with an X privy mark under the A of CAMV. The coin is 17.8mm diameter, 3mm thick and 5.07g. See ABC number 2774 on page 136 and Van Arsdell number 1925-5 on page 397 (= BMC 1772). Compare also LANCUM-5FE7DC.

One face of the coin displays a "three men in a boat" motif; the other face depicts a horizontal bar with a comb-like motif and radiating lines above. Compare ABC 2448, p.124 and CCI-31171. The coin is attributed to the Catuvellauni in ABC.

Description: A gold-alloy bracelet with loop terminals, Iron Age (c. 100 - 50 BC). The bracelet is comprised of two ropes plaited together, each rope is made up of two wires twisted together. Each terminal is formed of two loops. The outside surface of the terminals has been filled with a lower melting temperature gold-alloy containing approximately 16% more copper than the rest of the bracelet. The overall effect is to transform double loop terminals into single loop terminals.

One of the coins is a gold stater of Cunobelin (about AD 10-40). These coins originated in south-eastern England (modern Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and surrounding counties) and were produced in the late Iron Age. They are usually associated with the Trinovantes. Coins of Cunobelin are found over quite a widespread area and it is not uncommon for them to appear as far north as Yorkshire. The second coin is a gold stater inscribed VEP CORF. These were produced in about AD 20-40 in the north east Midlands and are usually associated with the Corieltavi.
