A complete copper alloy Iron Age or early Roman strap fitting or toggle, perhaps from a baldric or a platform terret, or used as part of a suite with a baldric, dating from about 100 BC - AD 100. The object has a circular plate which is decorated with incised lines. Two circles are joined by a reversed S scroll and each has another element extending from the circles too. There is basket-weave or basket hatching in the spaces. The edge of the design is missing owing to damage on the edge of the disc. The plate or disc is 13mm diameter and 2mm thick. An incomplete copper-alloy probable cruciform bead from a beaded torc of Iron Age date, about 50 BC – AD 150. The bead is cruciform, or quatrefoil, with a flattened central panel through which is a central rectangular aperture. The aperture would have accommodated an iron rod onto which the beads would have been threaded. One lobe of the quatrefoil is missing from this example. Each arm terminates in convex ovate lobes. these appear to be undecorated. The metal has a grey green patina. The bead is 26.6mm long, 15mm wide and 6.5mm thick. 4.1g. …

An incomplete, copper alloy and iron artefact, possibly a linch pin terminal of Iron Age to Roman date, about 100 BC - AD 100. The copper alloy forms an outer shell which is then filled with a core of ferrous material. In form, the artefact consists of a semi-circular shaft ending in a large, hemispherical terminal. The flat edge is an old break, so it may originally have been circular in section. At the junction of shaft and hemisphere are two narrow, transverse ridges, now considerably abraded. It is 33.9mm long, 22.2mm wide and 15.1mm thick. It weighs 25.9g. Some linch pins are a v…

An incomplete copper-alloy zoomorphic (bovine) probable vessel or bucket mount of late Iron Age to Roman date, about 100 BC-AD 200. The head is cast three dimensionally and is a chunky sub-triangular shape with a mainly circular cross-section. An integral horn projects from either side of the top of the head pointing upwards and curving in to form a crescent. One horn terminates in a worn point and the other is damaged at the tip. A copper alloy and iron prehistoric base metal hoard consisting of a vase-headed linch pin head and foot terminal, with a copper alloy mini terret found about 30m away. The iron linch pin shaft only survives as stubs projecting from each terminal. The mini terret is likely to have been used with the linch pin (see below) and the the hoard probably dates from 400 BC - 200 BC. Linch Pin The linch pin is in two pieces; the head, and the foot terminal. They would have been joined by an iron bar with the foot terminal slotting onto the end of the bar, but only the stubs of this survive at …

It consists of eight integrally cast beads, and part of one terminal. Each bead is a disc, the edge of which is decorated with two curved lines, creating a waisted central panel and elliptical outer areas (lipped). Copper alloy possible brooch fragment of Iron Age or Roman date, 300 BC - AD 410. The fragment consists of a sub-spherical knob on the top of an incomplete oval skirt or flange. The knop has a circular rough patch at the apex which may be a worn and patinated break. Projecting from the concave underside of the skirt, is another broken projection. Though very worn, this appears to be bifurcated and was perhaps a loop for suspension, or a double pin lug if the object is a brooch. The artefact is 17.7mm long, 25.3mm wide and 20.9mm thick. 14.4g. A fragment of solid gold rod, possibly part of a torc of Iron Age date, about 350 - 50 BC, but not conclusively so. The object is likely to be over 300 years old. The fragment is a short length of solid gold rod, of oval cross-section, and slightly curved. One flat end appears complete.; it is smooth, but is angled across the rod and is slightly concave. The other end is cut half way through with a shap instrument such as a chisel, and then torn/broken across the thinnest point. The break is rough and shows some small air pockets within the rod, suggesting an imperfect casting. T…

An incomplete possible Iron Age to Roman toggle, or linch pin terminal, or stud, made from copper alloy and iron, and probably dating from 400 BC - AD 100. The object was probably originally a thick circular disc with a socket on the reverse. Two sides have been removed, apparently sheared off unintentionally, but the damage is well-patinated, to leave approximately parallel opposing sides. Viewed in plan from above or below it presents an approximate rectangle with curved ends. One face of the disc has a clear raised rim that strongly indicates (but does not prove) its original ci…

An openwork, copper alloy slightly arched plate brooch, possibly of Iron Age date, about 300 BC - 100 BC. It is probably a Hull and Hawkes type 2Bb brooch. The design consists of two U shaped elements, joined in the centres of their bases by a large pellet. The uprights of both U shapes curve outwards through 180 degrees at the top and terminate in spherical pellet knops so that the brooch resembles two lyres fastened base to base. The design is completed by a single pellet between the tops of each pair of uprights where they begin to curve outwards. One of the pelleted knops at the e…

A lead possibly Spindle whorl of possible Iron Age date, about 800 BC - AD 50. If it is a spindle whorl, it is of Walton Rogers Form C1 which has no flat faces and curved sides. This example is sub-spherical. Alberti notes that globular (in which she includes spherical) whorls are uncommon. The central hole has a diameter of 8mm. This is consistent with Walton Roger's suggests range of 4-8mm for Iron Age and Roman whorls, and she also notes that spherical whorls cease to be used in the Roman period. The object has a well developed brown patina. It is 21.9mm tall, 26.2mm diameter and 6…
