A complete copper alloy Iron Age brooch. It is 42.8mm long, 13.5mm wide and 8.4mm thick. The brooch is an example of La Tene type II (Hattatt, 2000). It is made from a single piece of metal forming the pin and plate, which is coiled into a spring at the top. It then runs down the back of the plate, projecting backwards at the bottom with a side tab which bends round to form the catchplate. The piece of metal then loops forwards again and upwards and widens into the plate. This is decorated at the top with a convex circular projection with beaded decoration above and below, and the side…

An iron, but copper plated probable linch pin. The pin is very robust and is 106mm long. The pin is D shaped in section and tapers to a blunt point. It is 9.4mm wide at the thick end. The head of the pin is a separate spherical hollow knop which has a diameter of 14.5mm. There are vertical striations along the rounded side of the pin, and sloping transverse scratches on the flat side. The flat side is more worn at either end and not in the middle. Linch pins were used in the Iron Age and Roman periods to fix the wheels to the axels of vehicles. This probable pin is also probably from t…

A copper alloy vessel handle escutcheon dating from the Late Iron Age to Early Roman period, (100 BC - 100 AD). The mount is curved to fit the wall of the vessel, and was probably from a bucket. It has a lyre shaped loop through which the handle of the vessel would have been attached. This is above an openwork plate in the form of two arches on a curved base line. There is a lozenge shaped hole between the base of the loop and the apex of the two arches. Beneath the base line extends a semi circular tab with a rivet holes through it to fix the mount to the vessel. The whole escutcheon…

A cast lead / tin rich copper alloy coin; an Iron Age Potin, probably of the Cantii Tribe, Angular bull type, similar to Van Arsdell number 129-1 & BM (Hobbs) 670ff; Rudd ABC 171. The coin probably dates from 85 - 50 BC. It shows a Celticized head of Apollo right on the obverse, and a celticized bull charging left on the reverse. This appears to be the second Potin recorded on the PAS database found in North Yorkshire, and it was found only about a mile from the first one which is databased as SWYOR-0D20E2. The coin appears to be in very good condition. Other similar coins have also b…

A copper alloy artefact of the late Iron Age, currently unidentified. The object is essentially Y shaped in plan. The arms of the Y are formed from curved flat bars which are reminiscent of the sides of a spur. These arms bend downwards at the ends and they terminate in ancient breaks. The stem of the Y is formed from an ornate and complex loop which projects from the centre point of the arms. Where the elements join (though they were integrally cast) the arms part is wider and thicker than the rest of the arms. The projecting loop has a short neck, which is circular in section. Then …

A complete cast lead spindle whorl of uncertain date, but probably Iron Age or Roman. It is flat and disc shaped with a hole in the centre. The whorl has two flat faces, and the sides are straight. This makes it a Coppergate type B1 (Rogers, 2007, page 25). One face has radial lines incised into it. Although type B1 continues in use through the 5th. 6th and 7th centuries, ornamentation on Anglo-Saxon whorls is rare (ibid). It is also possible that it is medieval, but most whorls of this period are believed to have been decorated with patterns in relief. It is light brownish-white in c…

A fragment of a copper alloy terret, dating from the (probably late) Iron Age to early Roman period. The curved fragment is part of the hoop and part of the bar, with a stop between. The hoop seems to be plain (so the terret may be a Spratling type I) and it is thicker near the stop. It is oval in section. Only a tiny part of the bar survives, and it is corroded. It has a light grey green patina. Its length is 29.32mm, width is 12.8mm, thickness is 6.78mm and it has a weight of 8.16g. A similar example located on the database is NMS-41C378.
