Part of a copper alloy probable Iron Age ring-headed pin dating from about 800 BC - AD 42. The artefact is probably part of the decorative head of a ring-headed pin, but no parallel for one of this design has been identifed. The object consists of two circular, shallow concave discs connected at the apexes by an integral sub-rectangular sectioned arch of copper alloy. One disc is slightly larger than the other (12.3mm and 10.8mm in diameter). They may have contained some other material, such as coral or enamel, though no trace of such material remains. County: Bradford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead alloy probable spindle whorl possibly dating from the Iron Age, about 400 BC - AD 43. The whorl is sub-spherical with a flattened face top and bottom. This would fit into type B2 in the Coppergate classification system, a type that was mainly used in the Iron Age, but continuing into the 7th century. The central aperture is circular and has a diameter of about 6mm. This makes it more likely that the whorl is Iron Age in date (Walton Rogers, 2007, page 23 - 25). However, whorls are notoriously difficult to date and a later date (up to the AD 1600) cannot be ruled out. The whorl …
