A ribbed copper alloy clip or hook, possibly a shield binding clip dating from the Iron Age or Roman periods, about 300 BC - AD 100. It is rectangular in plan and U shaped in cross-section, and the inner face is also curved longitudinally, to allow it to fit snugly when clipped on to the inside of something rounded and curved such as a ring. The outer face is ribbed with four ridges. The short ends of the clip appear to be complete. The long edges are both broken, but one is also champfered. It has a smooth light grey green patina. It is 23.6mm long, 15.1mm wide and 12.9mm thick. 12.6…

A copper alloy 'fob' or 'dangler', believed to be a harness fitting from the Iron Age or Early Roman period. The object is an openwork circular disc with a projecting stem which terminates in a broken suspension loop in the centre of the reverse. It has a diameter of 34.7mm and is 22.4mm thick. The disc is damaged, but the original intention can still be understood. The design is of a circular rim within which are four evenly spaced rounded terminals from which spirals spring. There is another terminal in the centre where all four spirals end. The shape of the spirals forms an S shape…

An iron, but copper plated probable linch pin. The pin is very robust and is 106mm long. The pin is D shaped in section and tapers to a blunt point. It is 9.4mm wide at the thick end. The head of the pin is a separate spherical hollow knop which has a diameter of 14.5mm. There are vertical striations along the rounded side of the pin, and sloping transverse scratches on the flat side. The flat side is more worn at either end and not in the middle. Linch pins were used in the Iron Age and Roman periods to fix the wheels to the axels of vehicles. This probable pin is also probably from t…

A complete copper alloy Iron Age brooch. It is 42.8mm long, 13.5mm wide and 8.4mm thick. The brooch is an example of La Tene type II (Hattatt, 2000). It is made from a single piece of metal forming the pin and plate, which is coiled into a spring at the top. It then runs down the back of the plate, projecting backwards at the bottom with a side tab which bends round to form the catchplate. The piece of metal then loops forwards again and upwards and widens into the plate. This is decorated at the top with a convex circular projection with beaded decoration above and below, and the side…
