A fragment of a copper alloy object, possibly part of an Iron Age ring headed 'swan neck' pin dating to c. 400 BC- AD 43.
The head of the pin is a ring, with the edges raised. Part of the edge is worn and broken. Contained within the ring are traces of red brown material, and possibly fragments of glass. The outer edge of the ring is also concave with raised edges. From one edge a shank extends, this is sub rectangular in cross section, and ends in a worn break. An incomplete late Iron Age to early Roman copper alloy brooch dating from c. 25-70 AD. The brooch consists of the bow, spring and pin. The spring is wrapped around the head of the brooch, with two loops either side. Extending out from the coil of the spring is the pin, this has been bent out of shape and extends outwards. It narrows to a rounded point. The bow of the brooch is long triangular shape and narrows towards the foot, where there is a worn break. It is rectangular in cross section. The object is round, with the larger end flat. This is possibly a break, and is worn and broken. Running around the edge of the object is a foliate design, this consists of a zig zag pattern of leaves, surrounded by a border of incised lines around the edges of the leaves. An incomplete Iron Age copper alloy brooch of La Tene III type, dating from 100 BC to AD 100.
The bow is rectangular in shape and formed of a thin piece of copper alloy. At the head of the brooch the bow extends back, narrowing and curving into the round spring of the brooch, only one loop survives. This ends in a worn break. Decorating the front of the bow are two lines of rectangular impressions, these are irregular and run down the length of the bow. The bow narrows and ends in a sub triangular worn catch plate. An incomplete copper alloy late Iron Age to early Roman cosmetic mortar, dating to AD100- 200. The dish of the mortar is worn, and the edges are mostly missing. The mortar is u shaped in cross section. The mortar rises up slightly to the attachment loop, this originally would have been a circular loop, but it is worn and broken. Only half of it remains. The mortar has a mid green patina, and measures 39.2mm in length, 5.5mm in width, and weighs 3.30g.
