Edge-eroded copper alloy Iron Age so-called Thurrock type potin of the Cantiaci, Kent. Cast in high relief (greatest thickness 4mm), one side has an irresolvable prominent moulded shape along its centre, surely a miscast head of Apollo, and the other face has an exergue line surmounted by a bull butting right with a raised foreleg. Above the bull's head is a series of intersecting straight chevron lines, the last of which is crossed and resembles the letter A. The surviving patina is a dark lustrous brown. See Rudd, Ancient British Coinage (ABC) 120. D…

Eroded head fragment of a copper alloy Iron Age to Roman birdlip-type brooch. The spring, pin, most of the bow and catchplate are all missing from the fragment The upper head is oval with a trumpet brooch-like shape, the underside of which is deeply concave and probably originally housed the emerging pin. Where the head turns sharply down towards the bow there is a large moulded decoration with two collars that converge through the thickness of the moulding. On the front face, the collars are vertically separated by an axially aligned vulvate-shaped mouldi…

Incomplete, heavily corroded, and eroded copper alloy Colchester Derivative Rearhook type brooch. The brooch is missing the foot of the bow, catchplate, spring, and pin. The wings are eroded at the edges and have a shallow C-shaped cross-section, there is a tiny trace of solder to the underside of the left (as viewed from above) wing. The rearhook is reduced to a stub from which the bow forms a raised mid-rib that runs medially down its surviving length. Any decoration on the bow is obscured by pitting corrosion. The bow terminates in an abrupt bend, after…

Incomplete Iron Age la Tene 1 style brooch. The head is broken where it coils (leftwards as viewed from the front) to the first loop of the spring and pin. The bow is oval in cross-section with a medial depression in the front face. It expands in width to the high point then tapers down again to the foot. The foot continues on to form a right hand side catchplate and then turns back on itself, expanding into a pierced circular disc which finishes in a collared hoof shaped terminal, just short of the bow. Copper alloy Iron Age to Roman penannular brooch of Fowler/Booth type C. The brooch is made from oval cross-section wire formed into a circle, with a tapering oval-scrolled coil at both free ends. The void at the centre of one of the coils is filled with what could be orange enamel, which is now very powdery. There is no trace of a similar material in the second coil. The tapering wire pin is bent and has been made flat where it wraps around the frame. The sharp end reaches beyond the opposite frame to enable it to be turned around the frame for fastening. No other decoration can be s…

Copper alloy head and upper bow fragment of a single piece Iron Age La Tene/Nauheim style brooch. Bilateral four loop spring with an external chord. The pin has been bent back and only survives as a short length. The upper bow is extant and expands symmetrically in width in a curvilinear form then narrows again forming a narrow leaf shape, before fracturing transversely. There is narrow medial chevron-like decoration running down the bow probably made with a graver. Circa 100BC-AD50.

Incomplete, probable Bronze Age to Iron Age cast copper alloy Unidentified Object. The object comprises a hollow slightly ovoid body, truncated short of its full height to form an open bowl with a 7.6mm circular top opening. Extending from one side of the rim there is a narrow integral U-shaped cross-sectioned channel that projects slightly upwards relative to the plane of the rim. In the angle below the channel, and to the upper side of the bowl, is an integral circular loop, set on the same axis as the projecting channel. The end of the channel forms an …

A worn and incomplete cast copper-alloy (probably leaded) unidentified object of a known type usually referred to as 'moustache-like' or 'moustache shaped'. These objects are thought to date from the Middle Bronze Age to the Iron Age, after the discovery of one in the Salisbury Hoard (Stead, 1998, no.117) and various other finds reported to the PAS which are associated with Middle Bronze Age material. The object consists of a pair of solid three-dimensional pointed ovoids the bulbous upper parts of which are conjoined to each other by a bar stretching between the upper sides. The bar …

Copper alloy U-shaped loop, probably the high arch bow from an early (probably Adams type1) Iron Age brooch. The oval sectioned bow thickens and widens towards its centre with a straightening kick at both broken ends of the loop, indicating the bow survives complete; as such, the head and foot section of the brooch are missing from these old breaks. The bow has vestiges of decoration on the upper surface appearing to consist of low relief curvilinear chevrons reaching back towards the centre of the bow from oval features at either end. Circa 450-350 BC.

Incomplete copper alloy late Iron Age to Romano British strap union. The design is the same on both faces, comprising a central body with two flat circles conjoined one above the other, both have raised borders and a central circular hole. There is no extant evidence of enamel contained within any of the recessed circles. Both upper and lower circles have laterally projecting flat circular lugs set perpendicularly to the plane of the body. One lateral side of the body is broken at these lugs, but on the other side they extend fully and are bridged by a cylindrical strap bar of slightl…

Incomplete worn and corroded copper alloy late Iron Age to Roman centre-looped cosmetic mortar. Only the centre part of the crescentic body survives with the stub of the central basal loop extant at its lowest point. One half of one side wall is broken lower than the other. Interestingly the sides of the mortar are stained black and within the groove or trough of the mortar is a black coloured substance preserved amongst the copper corrosion products. Macroscopic examination of the nature if this material suggests that it could be charcoal. Assuming it is contemporary to the use of th…

FURTHER FRAGMENTS OF THIS HAVE BEEN FOUND. WAITING FOR THEIR HAND-IN TO RECORD AS A WHOLE. Fragmented copper alloy and enamel Iron age object. The segment to hand consists of a flat four sided plate the longest side of which has broken across three linearly aligned bordered circular cells, that contain the remains of red enamel. It is not possible to determine any hint of the original shape from this fragment as all edges are degraded and eroded making any original edge indistinguishable from a broken one. Copper-alloy late Iron Age object, probably part of a scabbard chape. A slightly crescentic and deepening U cross-sectioned arm which at the far end forms a symmetrical circular projection to each returning side, and continues in an extended knob with a fractured end. The opposite narrower end of the body also terminates in an old break. The shape of the two circular projections is echoed by a decorative inset circular grooved border that extends onto the body.
