Object type: BRIDLE BIT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part of a cast copper alloy object, probably a late Iron Age to Early Roman bridle bit; the side link from a three-link bridle-bit dating from 400 BC - 100 AD. The object is chunky and solid copper alloy. At one end is the remains of a broken loop. The rein ring would probably have attached to this loop. The breaks are very worn and well patinated. The sides of the loop are pointed oval in cross section with flat inner and outer faces making it slightly cylindrical. There are deep transverse stirations from wear on the inner face. The sides thicken towards the side where they attach…

A copper-alloy escutcheon (handle attachment) from the rim of a Late Iron Age vessel. The escutcheon consists of a shaped front plate the centre of which is arched in profile. From the back extends a Y-shaped fittin, the arms and stem of which are roughly circular in cross section. The stem of the Y is now worn and broken but would have gone through the vessel wall just below the rim and acted as a rivet to attach the escutcheon. Between the arms of the Y and the front plate is a worn circular hole for the ring shaped handle. The front plate would have concealed the attachments w…
