A Late Iron Age to Early Roman (100 BC - AD 100) cast copper alloy strap union/ junction similar to Taylor and Brailsford's no. 4 (Type 1) and no.51 (Miscellaneous). It measures 44.93x38.13x(max)6.33mm and weighs 26.08g. The central section comprises a double-disc set horizontally with a larger disc above and below, either side of 1 ½ S shape curving bars with expanded trumpet-headed terminals. These bars are D-shaped in cross-section and narrowest at the centre. A transverse rib flanks the terminals, between each pair of which is the strap-bar (also D-shaped in cross-section). T…

An incomplete cast copper alloy and enamel Strap Fitting of Late Iron Age to Early Roman date (c. 100 BC - c. AD 100), missing much of the enamel decoration. It measures 19.88mm in diameter and stands 7.71mm high with the loop. It weighs 4.3g. The head is circular in shape and flat. At the centre is a lozenge with elongated corners, reaching out to the edge of the head. This creates four semi-circular segments around the central lozenge, which carry traces of blue enamel. The central lozenge retains most of its red enamel. To the reverse is a rectangular loop, D-shaped in section…

Incomplete copper alloy Iron Age/ Roman strap union/ juntion, now in two parts. It is of Taylor and Brailsford Type I (Proceedings of the Prehistorc Society Vol.51, 1985). The two loops are different - one is cast while the other appears to be an axis bar (now missing) held between two projecting plates (one of which is now missing). Two plates project either side of both the central circular bosses. The axis bar is held between plates from different bosses, while the other is cast in place. The latter is 3mm in diameter. The former is indicated by the remains of a circular depressio…

Late Iron Age/ Roman copper alloy strap fitting, similar to Wild's button and loop fasteners group I (Britannia 1970) and fitting with Minter's Suffolk grouping (Lucerna 28, 2004). A roughly circular in section loop 16.5mm in diameter is thicker to one side (extending diameter to 18mm) and making it externally slightly pointed here. Its internal dimensions are 8.5x7.5, and rather oval in shape (shorter across from side to thickened side). At the thickened side is a projection, or neck, 5-6mm thick and not quite circular in section. It is slightly off-centre, so there is a 1-2mm inward …

Fragmentary trefoil strap union, one circular link is nearly complete (diam 11mm internal, 19mm ext), the other two are missing. In the centre of this strap union is a perforation. A number of trefoil strap unions are known from Britain (eg. Camerton, Somerset). From Norfolk, another example with a relief face in the centre is known from Fring. A date in the first/ second century AD seems most likely for this example.

There are two ?decorative fittings. One comprises a two headed 'arrow' curved into a 'horse-shoe' witht he tips of the two 'arrow-heads' touching at the base. On the underside, which is concave, there is what appears to be an integral rivet. Presumably this was a decorative mount that was placed onto leather or some other material. Dimensions = 18mm x 18mm. The other decorative fitting is fragmentary, therefore, its function is less clear. It comprises a circular loop that was integral to a larger object (possibly a strap-end?). Dimensions 18mm in total length, internal diameter of loo…
