A copper alloy pin of ring-headed 'swan neck' type, dating to the Early Iron Age, c. 600 - 400 BC. It is rather bent and measures 54.76mm in length and weighs 3.67g. The top of the pin resembles an S in shape, with an oversized top loop returning to touch the near side of the bottom loop. The ring-head measures 12.08x11.22mm (internal 7.34x6.54mm). The pin shaft is circular in cross-section becoming more D-shaped around the circumference of the pin head. Below the 'swan neck' the shaft measures 2.3mm in diameter, It narrows to a sharp point 0.7mm in diameter. The patina is a smo…

An incomplete Iron Age (500-200 BC) cast copper alloy pin, bent and missing part of the shank. It measures 40.79mm in length (unbent but incomplete length c.53mm) and weighs 4.07g. The head is disc-shaped (10.50mm diameter and 3.54mm high) with a central nipple (3.5mm diameter) projecting c.6mm. The area surrounding is slightly sunken. The shaft is circular in cross section and tapers to the break point (from 3.80mmto 2.67mm). The break is ancient. Cf. DOR-B177D4 which Dr Kevin Leahy has dated to 500-200 BC.

Late Iron Age ring headed pin possibly missing the bottom part of its shank. The shank is bent in two places and worn with much patina missing. It seems likely that both bends were intentional. Between the bends is a part of the shank that is very fragile. It has possibly been bent and then straightened. The shank has a 2.3mm diameter section. the very end apears to be missing. The damage is fresh. The ring head is a thickened part of the shank that has been bent in a circle. Its section is 4.5mm in diameter. It is 44.6mm in length and weighs 5.02g.

?Incomplete copper alloy ?Iron Age pin, possibly missing part of its shank. It is 40mm in length and weighs 3.84g. The shank is circular in section and is 3-3.5mm in diameter. At the finished end, the pin turns 90° into a short arm. On the end of this is a widened U shape, or C shape on its side, the C being 5-6mm wide and 3mm thick. The short arm is 2.5mm wide and 3.5mm thick. It is 5mm long, including the width of the top part of the pin (3.5mm). At the other end the shank has possibly broken, ?been cut, but the metal is quite worn. The metal is bluey-green in colour and the surface…

Late Iron Age/ Roman copper alloy pin, missing its tip. The incomplete shank is c.64mm in length, swelling from a 1.5mm diameter at its break to c.3.5mm diameter at the head. It is bent slightly halfway along. The head of the pin is 14mm in diameter with nicks or fairly deep incised 1mm long diagonal lines around the circumference. At the centre (and slightly off-centre) is a 7mm slightly domed boss, with diagonal incised lines radiating from the centre, perhaps in imitation of the sun, or a flower.

Complete copper alloy pin with bent shaft. The shaft of this pin is circular in section and tapers to a point. The head of the pin is bent back on itself into an S-shape. The head of the pin is also flattened and sub rectangular in section rather than circular. Although this pin has a curvilinear decorative head, it dos not have a 'kink' in the top of the shaft offsetting the head, as such, it does not fall into the category of the 'swan neck' pin (see Jope 2000, vol.2, pl. 268-9). Dating a pin such as this is notoriously difficult. It is likely that it is Iron Age, dating to the later…
