Sherd from shoulder of a wide-mouthed jar. Of 'Belgic' fabric, perhaps grog-tempered, with strong 'sandwich' effect - a thin dark grey/brown surface layer over a thin red layer, with a thick mid grey/brown centre. Decorated with two raised cordons set in grooves, one at the angle between the rounded shoulder and the upright rim, and the other further down the shoulder. Late Iron Age or early Roman, first century AD.

Record ID: SF4972
Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Two body sherds of grass-tempered pottery, one rather abraded and the other less so. The abraded sherd varies in thickness from 8 to 12 mm and weighs 28.19g. The less abraded sherd is 10 mm thick and weighs 20.89g. Both have voids where organic temper has burnt out, and inclusions of flint and quartz. They may date to the Iron Age, or to the early Anglo-Saxon period (6th or 7th century AD). Without more diagnostic parts of the vessel(s) (e.g. rim, decorated parts) it is impossible to tell the difference!
