An unusual porcine fitting of the insular La Tène tradition, probably dating from the 1st century BC to 1st century AD. It is possible this fitting is for a vessel, but it is so far unparalleled in type. There are two other ‘head’ fittings known (OXON-6E3722 and HESH-06696B), but they are very different in design, and this find does not appear to be related to them.
The lack of the portrayal of tusks, a hint of a dorsal ridge and large, pointed, forward facing ears are not definitive enough to label this example a wild boar, and so it is classed as a porcine of mix…

A Late Iron Age/early Roman (AD20-80) copper-alloy Colchester two-piece brooch, incompletein so far as it is missing the elements of its catch-plate, and much of its pin. The wings are short, flat and rectangular. Behind the wings is a hook that curves upwards to retain the axis bar, and, above this, an integral hook curved back on itself to retain the chord. The spring mechanism survives intact, around its axis bar, the chord retained within the rearward hook. There are two coils to each side; on one side the innermost coil develops into the pin which has been truncated after only c.…

An incomplete Late Iron Age/early Roman (AD20-80) copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch missing the majority of the catch-plate, the spring and pin. The wings are flat and rectangular; one significantly truncated, the other bent upwards at its end. Behind the wings is a hook that curves upwards to retain the axis bar, and, above this, an integral hook, now distorted and bent outwards, which would have retained the chord. No decoration is visible on the bow which tapers towards the tip. The bow has a sub-rectangular cross-section, with flat upper and lower surfaces and rounded sides…

Upper part of the bow and head of a Late Iron Age cast copper alloy birdlip type brooch. The lower part of the bow, pin, foot and catchplate are missing. It the top of the remaining section the bow is oval with a concave back. This probably formed the trumpet shaped head with a spring held in the concave section, although the attachment is lost. The edges of this oval head are damaged, particularly around the lower edges and it may have been larger originally. From this oval top the bow rises at 90 degrees before bending over abruptly and running relatively straight to the foot.
