Object type: WHETSTONE
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete whetstone of probable Early Medieval or Medieval date (c.800 – 1400). The whetstone is formed from a very fine sedimentary mica rich sandstone or siltstone and bedding planes are clearly visible in the profile. The whetstone is broadly sub-rectangular in plane with slightly tapering sides, and is also sub-rectangular in cross section. The edges are slightly bevelled. A relatively small suspension hole has been drilled in the upper part of the whetstone; this has been achieved by drilling (probably using a bow saw / drill) from both edges which has created an egg-timer shap…

Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Telford and Wrekin
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy votive model probably of a miniature wheel dated to the Late Bronze Age or Early - Middle Iron Age (1000-200 BC). The wheel is broadly sub-circular in plan with a drilled and filed internal division forming four radiating spokes. The rim of the wheel is oval in cross section; however, it varies in thickness around its circumference. This variation is accentuated by areas of adhering iron rich soil / iron pan from the wetland burial environment. The spokes merge with the centre of the inner edge of the wheel. Each of the four spokes is circular and arranged evenly aro…

Cast copper alloy fitting of probable later Iron Age or Roman date (300 BC – 300 AD). The fitting is incomplete and irregular in form broadly it is sub-rectangular in plan with a rounded terminal at one end and expanded one at the other (probably best described as a T shape). In cross section it is sub-rectangular or rectangular with rounded corners – the sides have distinct faceted edges. Where the fitting expands a sub-rectangular headed bar pierces the centre of the artefact. On the front face this is raised slightly above the surface of the metalwork, on the rear face this bar…

Two body sherds from pottery vessels, probably ‘tubby’ cooking pots of late Iron Age or Early Roman Date (100 BC – 100 AD). One sherd is broken into two pieces. The fabric of the sherds is a relatively hard earthenware containing moderate Malvernian rock fragments, commonly up to 2.0mm in size and fine quartz sand. Fabric number 3. The fabric colour is a mottled orange grey. The diameter of the vessel / vessels cannot be estimated due to the size of the sherds. There is also not enough of the body of the pot surviving to give an estimation of the depth or overall form/shape of th…
