The brooch fragment measures 44.9mm length, 23.5mm width across the bow and is 1.1mm thick also across the bow, and weighs 1.55 grams. The upper bow, including the spring/ hinge and head of the brooch, is lost…

Incomplete cast copper alloy one piece Colchester brooch of very late Iron Age to Early Roman date (1-75 AD). The head of the brooch is relatively small and two small stumpy wings extend from either edge. The wings are short and solid with a semi-cylindrical solid D shaped cross section. The spring is formed from a coiled length of copper alloy wire which has been integrally cast with the body of the brooch. This wire extends from the reverse head of the brooch and has is broken close to the head. This spring would also have been secured by a rearward facing integral cast hook. The spr…

An unidentified cast copper alloy artefact of potential late Iron Age – Roman date (100 BC – 250 AD). The fragment is made from a heavily leaded bronze and resembles stylistically the shape of a linch pin terminal, however, the overall size and composition differs from the known artefact type. The foot has an irregular square shaped socket which must taper along the shaft. The socket is filled with an iron corrosion and the remains of part of an iron fitting. From the foot the socket tapers into a shallow D shaped arm which is slightly bent and then flares into a pointed oval head …

Cast copper alloy looped fitting of probably late Iron Age or Roman date (300BC – 300 AD). The function of this loop is unknown, but it is likely to be either associated with horse furniture or possibly domestic goods –such as bowls. In form it resembles a toggle. The fragment consists of a horizontal bar from which an incomplete oval loop extends / conjoins. The loop is broken in two places and both breaks are relatively recent being both irregularly crisp and un-patinated. The cross section of the loop is distinctly triangular in shape. In plan and cross section the fragment is i…

A cast copper alloy bovine (bulls head) vessel / bucket mount dated to the late Iron Age / Early Roman period 300 BC – 300 AD. Incomplete whetstone of probable Early Medieval or Medieval date (c.800 – 1400). The whetstone is formed from a very fine sedimentary mica rich sandstone or siltstone and bedding planes are clearly visible in the profile. The whetstone is broadly sub-rectangular in plane with slightly tapering sides, and is also sub-rectangular in cross section. The edges are slightly bevelled. A relatively small suspension hole has been drilled in the upper part of the whetstone; this has been achieved by drilling (probably using a bow saw / drill) from both edges which has created an egg-timer shap…

A copper alloy ring, probably a finger ring, of probable late Iron Age or Roman date (50BC - 300 AD). The ring is cast in one piece and is relatively large and heavy. It has been much abraded in the plough soil and lost a considerable amount of its surface. The ring is relatively uniform in diameter and broadly D shaped in cross section. Silver toggle or fitting with globular knop on each side. Narrow body expanding at each end into a globule, creating an overall dumb-bell shape. Globules are of un-uniform size. Copper-alloy and bone examples of similar objects have been dated to the Iron Age, a similar shaped toggle can be found in Read (2005). An Iron Age object of this type is extremely rare. Analysis results of the toggle show that it is 97% silver the rest being copper, with traces of lead and gold; the amount of gold indicates that this toggle is not of Iron Age date, the manufacturing technique correspond…
