Cast copper alloy bracelet of unknown age – probably late Iron Age – Roman (100 BC-100 AD). The bracelet is formed from a cast length of copper alloy bar which seems to have been twisted in a vice. The twists for the most part are regular, although a series of stress fractures are evident in a number of places. It is possible that it has been cast – although the mould it was cast from must have been based upon a twisted example. The bracelet is broadly C shaped, with an open edge which is flanked by two bird head like terminals. In cross section is a relative regular oval. The te…

Cast copper alloy fitting of probable later Iron Age or Roman date (300 BC – 300 AD). The fitting is incomplete and irregular in form broadly it is sub-rectangular in plan with a rounded terminal at one end and expanded one at the other (probably best described as a T shape). In cross section it is sub-rectangular or rectangular with rounded corners – the sides have distinct faceted edges. Where the fitting expands a sub-rectangular headed bar pierces the centre of the artefact. On the front face this is raised slightly above the surface of the metalwork, on the rear face this bar…

Incomplete fragment from the lower section of a Late Iron Age to Roman brooch dating 50-200 AD. The brooch is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and square in cross section. The sides are faceted and there is no evidence of decoration present. The upper edge has a bulbous knop which might be the mid part of the bow - it does not seem associated with the head of the brooch. The bow tapers slightly along its length to a blunt point. The inner part of the bow on the lower edge has a rib which is extends to form a catchplate; this is much abraded and incomplete. There is no decoration on any…

Incomplete fragment from a cast copper alloy cosmetic mortar (also known as cosmetic or woad grinder) of late Iron Age to early Roman date circa 300 BC - 200 AD. The cosmetic mortar is incomplete - all that remains is the looped terminal and a small part of the grinding surface. The loop is cast integral to the body of the mortar and forms one of the terminals. Unusually for the type the loop has a uniform width and thickness; there is no form of junction where the loop returns and meets with the body of the grinder and no decorative motifs. The loop though the terminal is relatively …

Cast copper alloy fragment of unknown function – most likely to be part of a harness of later Iron Age or Roman date (200 BC – 400 AD). The fragment is cast in one piece; it consists of four circles conjoined on their edges to form an irregular quatrefoil in plan. In cross section the artefact is sub-rectangular. Through the centre of the quatrefoil is an irregular sub-rectangular hole, it is positioned at the junction between the four circles. The hole measures 5.4mm x 3.6mm. Each of the four circles differs in size, although they seem to be ordered with the largest example (diame…

Cast copper alloy pin or stud of probable later Iron Age or early Roman date 200 BC – 200 AD). The stud is complete consisting of a domed bi-convex head which tapers to a slight short shaft. The pattern is not well achieved being uneven and irregular in design. The shaft is an irregular square shaped section which tapers to a point. A cast copper alloy ‘miniature’ knobbed terret ring of probable later Iron Age or early Roman date (100 BC - 200 AD). The ring is broadly D shaped in plan, with a D shaped cross section. At the base of the ring is a horizontal bar with an oval cross section. This bar has an old fracture through it and is distorted in profile. The bar itself is slight and much thinner than the ring, it is also slightly offset. The ring itself is thick with distinct angular faces; it is regular in shape forming a regular U shaped arch. A cast copper alloy ring of unknown date, most probably Iron Age or early Roman (300 BC- 100AD). The function of the ring is debatable, but is probably either a belt ring or harness ring. The ring is circular in plan and has a distinct angular sub-triangular cross section; the section has its thickest part on the outer edge of the ring and is narrowest at the centre. The upper and lower surfaces have distinct faceted edges. There is no evidence of either cast or applied decoration and all casting residue has been removed from the surface of the ring. Cast silver coin like object of unknown date. The coin is clearly cast with a wide ridge like rim. In shape and broad style it is somewhat similar o the cast potins of the late Iron Age, but is unusual due to it ebing made in silver. On one face is a worn head, whilst the opposite has a horse or possibly horse and rider. The style is naturalistic. It is therefore possible it may be a much more recent gaming token or sport. A direct parralel has not been found but it has been recordedin case it is of a historic age.

Incomplete cast copper alloy penanular (open) large bracelet or probable small armlet. The dating of this artefact is problematic in that it is possible that it dates from the Later Iron Age or early Roman (Romano-British) period (200 BC - 200 AD), however the form is much copied and the condition of the metalwork and overall style suggests a relatively modern date (post 1750). Without a secure context it is unlikely that this dating issue can be resolved. If a pattern of late prehistoric or Roman metalwork evolves in the area then this may well sway the dating of this piece. The ar…
