Object type: VOTIVE MODEL
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Telford and Wrekin
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy votive model probably of a miniature wheel dated to the Late Bronze Age or Early - Middle Iron Age (1000-200 BC). The wheel is broadly sub-circular in plan with a drilled and filed internal division forming four radiating spokes. The rim of the wheel is oval in cross section; however, it varies in thickness around its circumference. This variation is accentuated by areas of adhering iron rich soil / iron pan from the wetland burial environment. The spokes merge with the centre of the inner edge of the wheel. Each of the four spokes is circular and arranged evenly aro…

Broad period: IRON AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy 'miniature or small' knobbed terret ring of probable later Iron Age or early Roman date (100 BC - 200 AD). Approximately 1/4 of the terret survives, originally it would have been D shaped or an irregular slightly angular pentangle in plan; it is now an irregular crescent (C shape). The cross section varies in shape along the length of the terret; for the majority it is D shaped. At the base of the ring is a horizontal strap bar with an oval cross section; this is broken and little survives. The strap bar itself is slight and much thinner than the ring, …

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Telford and Wrekin
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast composite copper alloy bow brooch of probable later Iron Age or possible early Roman date (150 BC - 100AD). The brooch is formed from several pieces which have been assembled to form the brooch; this is a very unusual manufacturing technique, one which must have been relatively labour intensive. The head plate of the brooch is broadly sub-triangular. Attached to the reverse of the head plate is another similarly shaped plate whose edges are rolled over to form a slight lip; it is suggested that the pin and hinge / spring were fitted to this by an unknown means. It i…

A copper alloy finger ring of probable late Iron Age or Roman date. The finger ring is formed from a cast length of semi-circular (D shaped) section copper alloy wire. The wire is 4.5mm wide and 4.2mm thick. It has been bent to form a sub-circular finger ring with a double turn with overlapping terminals. Towards the terminals the finger ring tapers and each has been clipped and filed to form the terminal. The terminals have also been hammered and are relatively square in cross section. There is no cast or incised decoration on either terminal. The ring has a maximum outer diameter of …

Broad period: IRON AGE

Incomplete cast copper alloy one piece Colchester brooch of very late Iron Age to Early Roman date (1-75 AD). The head of the brooch is relatively small and two small stumpy wings extend from either edge. The wings are short and solid with a semi-cylindrical solid D shaped cross section. The spring is formed from a coiled length of copper alloy wire which has been integrally cast with the body of the brooch. This wire extends from the reverse head of the brooch and has is broken close to the head. This spring would also have been secured by a rearward facing integral cast hook. The spr…

Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Telford and Wrekin
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy bovine (bulls head) vessel / bucket mount dated to the late Iron Age / Early Roman period 300 BC – 300 AD. The style of this example is more likely to be early Roman in date and be attributed to a long lived ‘Celtic’ or ‘Native’ Iron Age or Romano-British trend. The mount is an irregular triangular shape in plan and D shaped in cross section. The sides of the mount are slightly faceted and the rear face is concave with an irregular cell shaped depression. The mount measures 35.1mm length, 34mm maximum width, is a maximum 15.6mm thick and weighs 16.26 grams…

In cross section the fastener is oval or D shaped. The edges of the button head are slightly beveled. It measures 25.6mm in length, 18.9mm wide and is 4.7mm thick.
