Eardisland History and Heritage Group Eardisland Excavation 2013 Site Summary: Finds made during excavation of a single trench 16m x 1.25m across crop marks on cultivated land. Site number: RHYD 13 Context number: 025 Three conjoining sherds of pottery from the same vessel. Two rims and one body sherd. The surving rim represents 18% of the circumference of the vessel and has a projected diameter of 14cm. An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester type one-piece bow brooch dating to the Late Iron Age/Early Roman Period circa (AD 25-60). The brooch is missing the spring, the pin, the forward facing hook and the catch-plate. The brooch has the partial remains of the wings that form a T-shape and have rounded terminals. The spring is missing behind the wings and only the remains of the projecting claw and forward facing hook to hold the spring in place are present. Incomplete cast copper alloy one piece Colchester brooch of very late Iron Age to Early Roman of 1st century date. . The brooch is 'c' shaped in profile. The spring is partially intact, the catchplate is partially missing and the pin is also missing. The head of the brooch contains two wings that extend from either edge of the head. The wings are short and triangular in plan. The spring is formed from a coiled length of copper alloy wire which has been integrally cast with the body of the brooch. Ring of unknown function dating to Iron Age to Medieval period (c. 350 BC- AD c. 1500). The copper alloy ring is sub-circular in section with a sub-oval section. On pone portion of the ring there is severe wear which has caused the ring to narrow in depth and width. The opposite edge, on the interior, also shows signs of wear by the interior edge being slightly pointed. The surface of the ring has a well developed dark green patina. The ring measures 20.8mm long, 20.85mm wide, 5.2mm thick and weighs 4.6g. The date of the ring is based primarily on the surface condition. As to funct…
