Copper alloy brooch. Cast La Tene III (as kindly suggested by the finder) or Nauheim derivative brooch, Mackreth type ND 1.c. Three coils of a spring retaining some tensile strength are wound at the head, with the central coil expanded to form a narrow lentoid bow with a line of moulded dots down its middle, tapering to a plain foot whose end is flattened to form the stub of a folded unpierced catch plate. The pin running from one of the other coils is lost. Suggested date: Late Iron Age to Early Roman, 50BC-AD70

County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast one-piece T-shaped moulded fitting comprising a ring of three annular components with a longitudinal aperture of diameter 12.7mm, differentially heavily worn at one side of one end, and with an integrally cast lug of two bun-shaped parts of diminishing size set at right angles to the channel. Fresh corrosion at the flat end of the smaller bun may suggest another component or a decorative feature has been lost. Damage or a casting flaw appears on that side of the object opposite the two-staged lug. The finder kindly suggests a functional conne…

Copper alloy and iron bridle bit cheekpiece, probably a pair with NLM-977F74. The rusted relict of an iron ring retaining an external sheathing which had entirely enclosed the iron but which has been partly concealed by its explosive corrosion. A globular or pear-shaped copper alloy bulb 30mm long which appears to have been integrally cast with the sheathed band probably concealed further iron and now has an open end of diameter 7.7mm with very corroded iron within. The pear-shaped housing is now set at an angle to the rest of the band. These objects are familiar from the ‘chario…

Copper alloy and iron bridle bit cheekpiece, probably a pair with NLM-97F082. The rusted relict of an iron ring retaining an external sheathing of a concavo-convex or U-section copper alloy strip – possibly the relict of a copper alloy sheath which had entirely enclosed the iron but which has been lost to its explosive corrosion. A glossy patch shows where the crumbling iron has been consolidated with glue by the finder, and its extent now seems excessive compared to its surviving sheathing. A globular or pear-shaped copper alloy bulb 32mm long which appears to have been integral…

Object type: WHEEL
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Conwy
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy wheel. Cast wheel with four spokes; one pair forming a continuous line across a central hub, and the other pair forming an S-shaped curve, all within a D-section rim. Both straight and curving spokes bear a ridge or rib upstanding on one side, with the central boss or hub slightly protruding above them. These details are absent on the other side, which is flat except for the more marked projection of a central round-section hub. Though this projects further than that on the display side, it is too short to permit use as a spinning toy or whirligig. The wheel was an attribu…

Copper alloy and iron possible sword pommel. A cast lunate concavo-convex canoe-shaped object which strongly resembles a cosmetic mortar with indented ends is set over an integrally cast oval slightly flared plain pedestal. The thickness of the pedestal at the base appears to be c.2.5mm, and its centre is filled by rust suggesting the insertion of an iron tang. The unusual form of the quasi-mortar and its venturesome interpretation above might together make this a find of modest note, particularly were the latter upheld. Provision for an Iron Age warrior to mix his own woad war-pa…

Copper alloy torc fragment. A short cast fragment from a knobbed ring, with four distinct swellings on its display side, plain and smooth behind. Broken raggedly at either end and subsequently fiercely abraded. Knobbed bracelets appear to be a later Iron Age object type whose use continued, at least in East Yorkshire where furnished burial was practiced, into Early Roman times; the original overall diameter to be inferred from this small fragment would exceed that of an arm ring or bangle. Suggested date: Late Iron Ageto Early Roman, 100BC-AD100.

Copper alloy toggle. A solid cast object of dense metal comprising three sub-spherical objects, two larger and one smaller, each with a fringe of between three and five basal petals. The intended subject may be three hazelnuts, which might appear in this clustered wise on the tree or below it. The oval section scar of a lost element appears in the same position on the upper side of each of the larger nuts and may suggest a loop rising between them, probably to pass behind the smaller nut. The object bears white metal plating overall, and all its elements are lightly flattened and have …

Possibly pottery. Reduced shell tempered fabric with abundant calcareous inclusions to length 6mm. It is uncertain whether this comes from a very abraded potsherd which has lost all its original surfaces, or whether it may be from a structure made of daub which was tempered with shell. The finder kindly notes the presence of a marine shell fragment in NLM-C4F4B2 so this could be from a less burnt part of the same structure. Copper alloy brooch fragment. Spring, spring case and upper bow from a rosette brooch, Mackreth type ROS 2.b. The cylindrical case is now open behind, revealing a coiled copper alloy spring of at least seven coils with the broken stub of the pin protruding. A pair of horizontally incised lines are the only decoration of the case, which is clasped by a broad strip bow with curved top and seven longitudinal ridges, grouped three in the middle flanked by a pair on either side.
