Copper alloy coin. Base metal core, probably for a gold plated stater, though this example was either never plated or has entirely lost its surface coating. The obverse derives from the wreath of Apollo on Macedonian staters from the Mediterranean world. The reverse design was not immediately identified by a trawl through the ABC reference book. However, it does comprise a haphazard arrangement of lines similar to the most discombobulated of Celtic horses to appear on the gold coinage of the Corieltauvi, though it would not easily be mistaken for even these. The most common local coins…

Copper alloy possible coin. Base metal core from a plated Iron Age coin. The surface texture on one side might suggest a wheat ear or wreath motif to the eye of faith, as appears on the South Ferriby gold stater of the Corieltauvi (e.g. ABC no. 1743), and curvilinear features on the other side could contribute to a Celticised horse motif. Were this identification sustained, it might point to a Late iron Age date, Hazelgrove Period 2 Phase 6 or Period 3 Phase s 7-8, 50BC-AD40 Obverse description: possibly wreath and crescents Reverse description: possibly Celticised horse left …

Copper alloy and gold coin. A base metal core from a plated stater of the Corieltauvi, possibly imitating a North East Coast gold stater, cf. ABC no. 1719; Van Arsdell 800-6 accepts this as a distinct plated variant. This example retains extensive traces of red gold plating overall. Suggested date: Late Iron Age, 50-20 BC, Haselgrove Period 2 Phase 6. Obverse description: Worn remnant of Apollo wreath. Reverse description: Celticised and discombobulated horse right, a large pellet below horse and a smaller one below its tail. Diameter: 17.4mm, Weight: 3.11gms

Copper alloy coin. Base metal core for a plated uninscribed South Ferriby gold stater of the Corieltauvi, cf. ABC no. 1743, Van Arsdell no. 811, Haselgrove Period 2 Phase 6, 50-20 BC. A base metal core would represent fraud were the material of the coin important to its use, though if a yellow tint was its most important attribute, probably for non-secular reasons, a copper alloy might have been appropriate. The mass and size of this object are not dissimilar to what would be expected of a gold coin. Possibly darkened by treatment with oil by the finder. Obverse description: Apollo…

Obverse description: Irregular features, including a possible head to left of flan. Copper alloy coin. Scyphate hammered coin with chipped edges, an indeterminate - probably southern British, possibly Trinovantes - uninscribed issue, close parallels were not located in ABC or Van Arsdell (though cf. Van Arsdell plate 51 nos 1971-1 and 1973-3 and ABC no. 2885). Probably Late Iron Age, Haselgrove Period 3, Phase 7, 20 BC-AD 10, probably imitating or derived from a later Republican Roman denarius. Chipped around the edges. Obverse description: Portrait bust right, with straight nose and pointed chin, deep set eye and prominently back-combed or ridged hair. Reverse…

Copper alloy gilt coin. Plated South Ferriby uninscribed stater of the Corieltauvi, ABC no. 1743, Van Arsdell 811-2; Haselgrove Period 2 Phase 6, issue of 50-20 BC. The finder considers it more likely that the coin is debased gold with alloy content revealed by its partial melting on the obverse. This reporter considers the appearance of dull metal below plating at a chip on the edge to ally this piece with plated issues.
