A copper-alloy zoomorphic mount, possibly Late Iron Age or Roman in date. The mount is intended to represent an animal, possibly a hunting dog and comprises a hemispherical section body, the upper surface of which is decorated with two pairs of ribs and grooves flanking a central circular perforation, which is filled with a circular-section rivet. The lower surface of the body is plain with slight depressions either side of the rivet which pierces the body. At one end, the body possesses a rounded terminal. At the other, an oval-section neck extends at right angles before terminating …

A copper-alloy mount, probably dating from the Late Iron Age to early Roman period and taking the form of a stylised zoomorphic head. The head is roughly pear-shaped, flattened on the underside, with a pair of slender ears angling upwards at the back, forming an angle of approximately 45 degrees with the top of the head. A vertical perforation extends down the centre, an area of iron corrosion at the base indicating the likely composition of the now-missing rivet. The face, which tapers to a slightly upturned snout, has no discernible features. Length: 23.5mm; width: 15.8mm; hei…

A copper alloy mount, of probable late Iron Age or early Roman date. These objects are believed to be harness fittings. The object is of openwork Triskele design, with three tendrils, each curling clockwise around a circular border. The centre of the object, from which the tendrils emerge, has an openwork circle. There is no decoration on either side of the mount, nor any scars from which a possible suspension loop or attachment may have been. There are filing marks on both sides. The outer circular frame is broken at one section. Several similar objects have been recorded on the…

A cast copper alloy bulls head vessel or bucket mount dated to the late Iron Age / Early Roman period 300 BC - 300 AD. The rear face has a concave vertical area containing some iron corrosion. The mount measures 30.5mm in length (from ears to snout), 31.5mm in width (from widest parts of horns), is a maximum 12mm thick and weighs 21.1 grams. The front face of the mount (bull) is elaborately decorated. The horns stand approximately 14mm high, on a more vertical axis from the head, giving the whole object a roughly L-shaped appearance from the side. The horns are circular in section w…

A fragment of a possible late Iron Age triskele-type mount. The fragment consists of what could be one swirl of the triskele design, broken at all angles. The reverse of the mount is hollowed, as are other examples of this type of mount. The most similar example to be found on this database is YORYM-1A6656. The complete mount would have been is circular in plan with the openwork triskele design in the centre. Some of these mounts are actually fobs as they have a circular suspension loop on a stem above the central design. Examples of triskele mounts can be seen in MacGregor, no.39 & 40.

A copper-alloy oval, ring shaped mount of uncertain, but possible late Iron Age or Roman date. The mount measures 16.8 mm long and 13.2 mm wide. It is 2.6 mm thick. The cetntral ring is 9 mm long and 5.8 mm wide. The mount is worn but decoration can be made out on both of its faces. The decoration appears to be in the form of laural leaves. On one side of the mount slight wear is suggestive of a break from an attaching component. The precise function for this decorative mount is currently unclear and no parallels have yet been found.

An interesting cast copper-alloy Iron Age object, probably a fitting or mount of some type, although a parallel is yet to be found. The object is a hollow chevron shaped tube, 50 mm in length. Within the tube the remains of another copper-alloy bar or tube can be discerned. The item is decorated with two opposing birds on the top. The front has three circular grooves, each surrounded by a circular ridge. Within the central of these grooves is what appears to be the remains of a shell inlay. It is therefore likely that the other two grooves also had inlays of some sort. The rear of the …

A sub-circular copper alloy mount with a central openwork triskele design, dating to the early 1st century AD. The mount measures approximately 25 mm in diameter and has an integral rivet which protrudes 10 mm from the centre of one side, whilst the other side is flat. The mount has been damaged and is missing part of its outer frame. There is also a crack in one of the arms of the triskele design. The mount is of a somewhat irregular shape now, although it is likely that it was circular when undamaged and complete.

Lozenge shaped copper alloy mount, probably a belt mount. The Mount has a circular depression in the centre (diameter 13 mm). In the centre of this depression is a circular hole (diameter 5 mm). This gives the mount the appearance of an eye. A faint ring around the hole on the reverse of the object suggests that an intaglio was once attached to the mount. The size and shape of the mount is similar to that described as a celtic 'eye' form mount in Benet's Artefacts of England and the United Kingdom (2000).
