An incomplete copper alloy Cosmetic Mortar of late Iron Age to early Roman date (100 BC - AD 200). The mortar is formed of a curved bar with a 'V'-shaped cross section. The retained arm has a curved edge and on the upper edge is an integral loop. The object has a transverse break resulting in the loss of one of the arms.
Cosmetic mortars such as this would have formed part of cosmetic sets, the now missing corresponding pestle allowing for the grinding of small amounts of cosmetic powders. Jackson (2010:67) writes that cosmetic mortars and pestles are a British phenomenon

A cast copper alloy end-looped cosmetic mortar of late Iron Age to early Roman date. Triangular in section. Two rows of dots have been impressed into each side of the object. The mortar is 63.5mm long, from tip to end of suspension loop. It is 10mm wide, at the widest point. The end loop is 7mm in diameter.
