Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete Iron Age bow brooch, the pin and almost all of the catchplate missing, the lowest extent part of the flat-sectioned bow distorted. The chord of the four-coil spring (now in two pieces, a recent break) is external, i.e it transverses in front of the coils. A knurled median groove extends down the bow from the start of the spring to a pair of transverse grooves immediately baove the catchplate. Extant length 44mm. The spring arrangement is the same as that of Hattatt 2000, fig. 148, no 732, a La Tène II brooch, while the form of the bow is typical of La Tène III. 1st century BC.

The find consists of a single Iron Age twisted multi-strand style torc with ring terminals similar to others found in Norfolk over the last 60 years.  The torc has an internal diameter of approximately 20 cm.  It is made of predominantly gold and silver. It is made from four strands of wires twisted around each other two and a half times. Each of the 4 strands is made from 6 wires (c. 3 mm thick).  The strands are alternately twisted one clockwise and the next counter clockwise.  The strands were cast on to the terminals.  Evidence for this is clearly visible …

Incomplete Late Iron Age to Roman copper-alloy brooch, probably a rosette type. It has an incomplete cylindrical spring case, now open at the top, with all edges being worn breaks, perhaps apart from the forward edge and a concave pin slot at the centre of the reverse. The bow is reasonably flat in cross-section. It arches in a C-shaped profile and probably tapers in width from top to bottom. The lateral edges are heavily abraded and no more than half of one edge is original. Decoration begins with a narrow transverse groove and ridge immediately below the spring case. Then …
