Cast-in-one Iron Age copper alloy vessel mount in the form of a bull's head in the round with horns curving slightly backwards and inwards, exaggeratedly high brow ridge, lentoid eyes (one obscured by corrosion) and very deep nostrils. The triangular section neck meets a flat reverse before returning to the rear of the muzzle and then continuing down to a break as a backwards curving bar with a median moulded groove. There is no evidence for attachment. Length 42mm. Width 13mm.
Although this bears some resemblance to bull's head mounts from vessels other than buckets found at Henley an…

This cast model of a bovine head has two small ears situated beneath two curved horns(one of which is broken). Its eyes are represented by two circular perforations. The nose is rather elongated and has an attachment loop at its end. The loop is decorated with a number of incised lines located around its circumference. There is another much larger loop sprouting from the top of the animal's head. Other than the incised lines on the lower loop, this piece is undecorated giving it a very 'clean' quality, a sense that is heightened by its symmetry. Objects such as this were mounted on ve…

Romano-British cast copper-alloy mount, in the form of a bird, probably a duck, in the round. An integral rivet on flat underside suggests the object was attached to leather. The beak tapers to a rounded (slightly damaged) point in a rather un-duck-like manner. Four pairs of oblique, apparently moulded, grooves on the back represent feathers in a very stylised manner. The upturned tail has received a little recent damage. This is a much more sophisticated version of a possible duck from Colchester (Crummy 1983, no.4268). Ducks and other water-birds “perhaps belong to a Celtic water-c…

Small fragment of a cast copper alloy vessel handle, tightly curving and D-sectioned, probably late Iron Age or Roman. Part of the body or wall of the vessel is integral with one end where the outer, convex face is decorated with three moulded grooved rib chevrons. On the remainder of this face two median grooves, truncated by the break, converge to a point near the chevrons. No parallel noted. Extant length 20mm. Width 18.5mm.

Late Iron Age - early Roman copper alloy zoomorphic spout from a strainer bowl dating to the period c. AD 25 - 100. It comprises a concavo-convex D-shaped plate with the spout projecting from the centre. The spout is in the form of an animal head, probably a dog or bear. It has short pointed ears sitting on either side of the head and prominent moulded brows, the eyes indicated by two punched annulets. The snout terminates in a blunt nose, the lower jaw extending outwards and down to form the oval spout. The animal's fur is indicated by a series of moulded wavy lines. A series of moul…

Copper alloy Iron Age to early Roman enamelled vessel mount. The mount has an integral upper loop projecting from a pelta shaped attachment body. One wing of the body is missing from an old break. On the reverse is an integral transverse raised bar with substantial evidence of iron staining beneath. The location tallies with a circular recess on the front face which in turn is filled with iron corrosion. The bar is creased with an arc on its upper surface possibly from supporting the rim of the vessel. The front is decorated with deep pelta and circular shaped enamel cells flanking th…

Fragment of copper-alloy bull's head mount from a bucket or similar vessel, of late Iron Age or early Roman date. Only the centre survives, with one well-preserved eye (the animal's left) made from a gradual swelling outlined with a double pointed-oval groove. The other eye is largely lost along with most of the surface, which has suffered badly from corrosion; where the surface survives it is grey and glossy, and looks like a white-metal coating. In the centre, above and between the eyes, is a circular hole 6mm in diameter. To either side are broken-off projections which may original…

Copper alloy mount, S-shaped with a circular boss within both curves, probably Late Iron Age and probably from a vessel. The reverse is gently curved. A rounded lug projecting from the front face may be pierced transversely. Much detail is obscured on all surfaces by ferrous deposits. There is no visible means of attachment on the reverse. No close parallel has been noted. Length 31.2mm. Width 13.3mm. Thickness 4.3mm. Thickness at lug 11.4mm.

Incomplete Late Iron Age to Early Roman copper alloy possible vessel mount, in the form of the cast head of a bull or ox with forwards projecting horns and dots for eyes. Stumps of a handle suspension loop above on the top of the head. Stump of a broken projection below the muzzle, possibly an attachment lug. The curvature of the reverse indicates attachment to a vessel wall and the hollow reverse contains corroded traces of solder. Width 15mm. Extant height 17mm. Weight 3.29g. Cf. MacGregor 1976, cat. nos. 313, 317, 318 and 320). 1st century AD.

Copper alloy mount and a copper alloy ring, probably for the suspension of a vessel. Probably Late Iron Age or Early Roman. The round-sectioned ring, complete but sprung apart at a break, is engaged with a loop at the top of the mount, below which two arms clasp a fragment of iron. The arms taper from the loop before expanding into rounded terminals, in the centre of which there is a copper alloy rivet. Some detail is obscured by corrosion. External and internal diameters of ring c.20 and c.15mm. Length and width of mount 24 and c.7mm. Thickness of iron c.3 - 4mm. No good parallel not…

Fragment of cast copper alloy Iron Age/Romano-British unidentified object. Loop with round aperture and D-shaped exterior. The exterior of the straight side of the D is original and is continuous with one broad face of the loop. The opposing edge of the straight side is missing, as are both ends. Dark green patination covers all areas not subject to ancient or recent damage. Fractures suggest the metal is brittle. Width 10.5mm. Length >15.5mm. Thickness 5.5mm.

Fragment of Iron Age or Romano-British openwork unidentified object. At one end a spherical lobe with round recess partly filled with white material, possibly fixative for a missing setting, the other end is broken at a bifurcation or channel, which lines up with a small groove in lobe. In the centre a curved aperture is similar to those in a scabbard chape from Brough, Westmorland (MacGregor 1976 cat. no. 165.)
