Late Iron Age or early Roman copper-alloy cosmetic mortar of end-looped type, missing part of its loop (worn breaks). It is U-shaped in cross-section, with a smoothly polished concave interior and a slightly more angled exterior. It has a very grey patina that is now corroded and flaking, especially on the exterior, over a greener inner metal, so it may originally have had a tinned or silvered surface. There is no other decoration. One end of the mortar is worn and rounded; it is difficult to tell if it is complete. The object then flares in width and thickness to the centre, aft…

An incomplete copper alloy late Iron Age to early Roman birdlip brooch. The head is trumpet-shaped with the remains of a single lug in the centre of the reverse where the sprung pin would have been attached originally (now missing). The outer face of the head has a raised line across its lower edge and below this the upper bow narrows slightly before expanding to a narrow rounded moulding with a raised transverse ridge across each end. Below this a beak-like moulding with a turned up end projects downwards. The lower bow is D-shaped in cross-section with a raised ridge running longitu…

Description: Two aurei of Augustus found in the same area as six other coins recovered previously (2017T827, NMS-297275) and representing an addendum to that group. Each carries a peck mark on the obverse, similar to the peck marks noted on the other coins. The pecking would have been carried out to check that the coins were of gold and not plated forgeries. Date: The lack of any coins of Tiberius implies that this hoard was assembled in the early 1st century AD, probably in the first two decades of the century, in the late Iron Age, and well before the Roman Invasion of AD43. Late Ir…

A complete cast copper alloy terret ring dating to the Iron Age to Roman period (c. 50BC- AD 150). The terret is circular in shape with a D-shaped section. It is formed with two internal loops. The larger of the loops is a large crescent shape, the small loop is a sub-triangular in shape with two inwards curving sides and one outwards curving. Above the smaller loop, the body thickens slightly and presents a rectangular recess on both faces of the object. This presumably functioned as a notch to help secure material looped around the object. Between the loops are two motifs of a …

Curving rod of circular cross-section turning ovoid as it narrows, broken at both ends, with a dull brown surface much disturbed by recent scuffing. The age of the breaks, also badly scuffed, is uncertain. The diameter reduces steadily from one end to the other, 5.5 - 3.8mm. Perhaps part of the bow of a Middle to Late Iron Age brooch. Extant length 40mm. 4th - 1st century BC.
