Incomplete probably Late Iron Age to Early Roman brooch of uncertain type. The head has not survived. A round-sectioned tenon-like projection from the upper end of the bow is probably incomplete. It might have continued to form the spring and pin but there there is no evidence for wings. The rectangular-sectioned bow descends to a pointed foot and is decorated on the front face with two moulded longitudinal grooves which merge and then fade out before the foot. On the folded-over part of the solid catchplate there are eight transverse, probably moulded, grooves (cf.…

Copper alloy U-shaped loop, probably the high arch bow from an early (probably Adams type1) Iron Age brooch. The oval sectioned bow thickens and widens towards its centre with a straightening kick at both broken ends of the loop, indicating the bow survives complete; as such, the head and foot section of the brooch are missing from these old breaks. The bow has vestiges of decoration on the upper surface appearing to consist of low relief curvilinear chevrons reaching back towards the centre of the bow from oval features at either end. Circa 450-350 BC.

Copper-alloy probable bead of uncertain date. It is annular and broadly bi-convex. A hard concreted mass of sand, silt and perhaps clay fills the central hole and covers much of the outside surface. Nevertheless, a number of moulded circumferential ridges, grooves and channels are visible. There is a convex ridge running around the centre and another slightly wider and thicker convex ridge encircling the opening of the hole on one face. Between these are two step-like grooves separated by a flat band at an approximately 45-degree angle to the plane of the circumference. On the other s…

The fragment is roughly semi-circular and flattened in shaped, with an irregular break along the straight edge. Within this break the edges of three curved recesses can be seen. There is a raised rim, triangular in cross-section, running along the curved edge of one face. The remainder of this face is decorated with two intersecting engraved curved lines towards the break and a section filled with engraved dots behind this. The surface of the metal is corroded in places. The function of the…

Incomplete Roman copper-alloy strip bow brooch of Mackreth’s (2011) Durotrigan Type 8, with the uncharacteristic rolled-over head, part of which is missing. The bow and part of the foot is extant, but the pin is missing and there is no trace of a catchplate. The extant part of the head is rectangular in cross-section and divided in two by a central V-shaped pin-slot. The head develops from the top of the bow, expanding in width and tapering in thickness as it begins to curl forward, terminating shortly afterwards in a worn break. The bow is also rectangular in cross-sect…

The hook for the chord and the lug for the axis bar are also missing to worn breaks. The catchplate appears to be mostly extant although it has lost some of its edge to abrasion. The brooch is now bent in half with the tip of the bow close to and directly behind the head. The wings are short and narrow, flat in cross-section and tapering in thickness from their emergence at the head to their tips. On the reverse, a central a rectang…

Late Iron Age to Early Roman cast copper-alloy toggle (or similar fastener). It consists of bar of oval cross-section, with a larger oval disc-like terminal at each end. These are parallel to each other, but set at a slightly oblique angle to the bar. Another bar emerges from the centre of the first, also at a slightly oblique angle, but broadly parallel to the discs. It is narrow, thinner and a little longer than the first bar, and sub-square in cross-section (rounded corners, slightly convex sides). It expands marginally in width after about halfway before terminating in a third and…

Incomplete Middle Iron Age copper-alloy La Tène I brooch of Adams (2013) Type 1B (either 1Ba or 1Bb). The bow is low-arched and oval, near circular in cross-section. It tapers at the head and wraps itself around a separate axis bar, forming two coils of a real or mock spring at one side of the bow. This develops into an incomplete external chord which terminates in a worn break. On the other side of the axis bar there is a separate and detachable but incomplete looped pin. Only the loop and about a quarter of the length of the pin shaft survive, which is circular in cross-section and…
