Iron Age incomplete, circular openwork harness fitting with incomplete integral tapering attachment shank in centre of reverse. In battered condition, about 33% surviving. Decoration consists of cast triskele motifs and crescentic apertures. Diam. c.35mm. Shank length >13mm. Very similar to an example from Brampton (HER 1124) which has a loop on the end of the shank, worn in such a way as to suggest it may have been a pendant or ‘hanger / dangler’ (Hutcheson 2004 32, cat. no.59). 1st century BC - 1st century AD.

A complete copper-alloy Romano-British cosmetic pestle. The stem of this pestle is curvilinear and it has an end loop. It measures c34.9mm in length, 5.4mm in width and 5.4mm in thickness, it has a roughly circular cross-section and the stem tapers to a rounded point. The end loop is circular in shape measuring 7.4mm externally and 2.4mm internally. This pestle would have been used with a crescent-shaped mortar with a central longitudinal groove to grind up small quantities of powder or cosmetics. These cosmetic sets are only found in Britain during the Romano-British period. They …

Iron Age copper alloy toggle, shaped rather like the head of a hammer-head shark, flattened ends, swollen in centre with integral attachment loop on the back, broken at change of angle and start of bifurcation for missing loop, length 28mm, diameter 13mm. Fragment of very chunky Iron Age beaded bracelet, round section hoop decorated with moulded transverse ribs and grooves. Both ends are broken. Apart from a small amount of recent damage the breaks are ancient, and covered in ferrous staining. Towards one end, which is almost certainly miscast and is broken longitudinally and distorted, the section becomes enlarged and D-shaped, the inner face flattening out. Hoop diameter 7 - 8mm. Internal diameter c.33mm. Probably penannular. The dating is not certainly Iron Age, cf. Macgregor 1976, 106, nos.228-9. The ribbing is more rounded and lar…

Romano-British cast copper-alloy mount, in the form of a bird, probably a duck, in the round. An integral rivet on flat underside suggests the object was attached to leather. The beak tapers to a rounded (slightly damaged) point in a rather un-duck-like manner. Four pairs of oblique, apparently moulded, grooves on the back represent feathers in a very stylised manner. The upturned tail has received a little recent damage. This is a much more sophisticated version of a possible duck from Colchester (Crummy 1983, no.4268). Ducks and other water-birds “perhaps belong to a Celtic water-c…

Iron Age Triple-lipped terret, three pairs of transverse lips on round section D-shaped ring. The rectangular section attachment bar is recessed at the base of collared mouldings.
