Object type: MINIATURE OBJECT
Broad period: IRON AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a Late Bronze Age to Roman copper-alloy miniature socketed axehead. About one third of the object is extant, consisting of about a third of the socket mouth, most of the full length of one side and one complete side-loop. There are longitudinal worn breaks on two edges and a short transverse worn break at the tip (probably less that five millimetres from the original tip). The socket mouth is ridged (thickened) and enough survives to show that it was oval when complete. Another, less prominent circumferential ridge runs parallel to the mouth, about six or seven millimetre…

All of the spring and pin and the lower part of the foot (beyond the catchplate) is missing to worn breaks. The bow is sub-oval in cross-section: convex at the front and sides but flat on the reverse. It tapers in width and thickness from the centre to the extremities. The break at the top occurs just after the bow begins to curve forward to form the spring. The catchplate projects downward and to the right (when viewed from the front). The lip is on the right-hand side and the pin-groove f…

Incomplete copper alloy late Iron Age to Romano British strap union. The design is the same on both faces, comprising a central body with two flat circles conjoined one above the other, both have raised borders and a central circular hole. There is no extant evidence of enamel contained within any of the recessed circles. Both upper and lower circles have laterally projecting flat circular lugs set perpendicularly to the plane of the body. One lateral side of the body is broken at these lugs, but on the other side they extend fully and are bridged by a cylindrical strap bar of slightl…

Fragment from a horse bridle bit, of late Iron Age or early Roman date, 1st century BC or 1st century AD. The object is a short cylindrical tube of cast copper alloy, decorated on the outside with cast grooves. At one point on the exterior is an oval-section scar from a broken-off bar, measuring 10.5 x 9mm in cross-section. This has a bold ridge around the base before the break, which increases the cross-section to 15.5 x 13 mm. The break is slightly worn and possibly iron-stained. Incomplete worn and corroded copper alloy late Iron Age to Roman centre-looped cosmetic mortar. Only the centre part of the crescentic body survives with the stub of the central basal loop extant at its lowest point. One half of one side wall is broken lower than the other. Interestingly the sides of the mortar are stained black and within the groove or trough of the mortar is a black coloured substance preserved amongst the copper corrosion products. Macroscopic examination of the nature if this material suggests that it could be charcoal. Assuming it is contemporary to the use of th…

FURTHER FRAGMENTS OF THIS HAVE BEEN FOUND. WAITING FOR THEIR HAND-IN TO RECORD AS A WHOLE. Fragmented copper alloy and enamel Iron age object. The segment to hand consists of a flat four sided plate the longest side of which has broken across three linearly aligned bordered circular cells, that contain the remains of red enamel. It is not possible to determine any hint of the original shape from this fragment as all edges are degraded and eroded making any original edge indistinguishable from a broken one. Decoration can be seen on the corroded surface consisti…
