Incomplete iron and copper alloy linch pin dating to the period c. 100 BC - AD 100. The head is missing. The iron shank is now heavily corroded, the original cross-section indiscernible. The base of the shank fits into a socketed copper alloy foot. Sub-conical in form, traces of a moulded collar are visible at the mouth of the socket under a layer of iron corrosion. Early Iron Age iron socketed axehead, complete apart from a small piece of the cutting edge. Some detail is obscured by corrosion, but a considerable amount of metal remains un-oxidised. Length 90mm. Width 53mm. Thickness 34mm. Iron socketed axehead partly covered and filled with chalky gravel concretions. Length 152mm, width 58mm, thickness 38mm, aperture of side-loop 18mm x 5mm. Such objects are characteristic of the Hallstatt culture of the earliest Iron Age of central Europe. They are rarely found in the British Isles, with examples from the Berwyn Mountains of Wales (Savory, H. Guide Catalogue of the Early Iron Age Collections 1976, 20) and Cold Kitchen Hill, Wiltshire (Cunliffe, B. Iron Age Communities in Britain 1974, fig.14:2.5). c.800 - c.600 BC
