A small copper alloy mount. A possible end-cap for a knife or a decorative stud. The mount is a pointed oval in outline, flat at the base and deeply convex on the top. It is of solid metal with a projecting stub of iron inset in the flat base (the iron is possibly a stud or part of a knife tang and is sub-circular in cross section). The upper, convex surface of the mount is in the form of a stylised human head. At one of the points is a small, very stylised human face comprising two small ring-and-dot eyes set close together above a large triangular moulded nose, with a short, transve…

Iron Age copper alloy decorative terminal, probably of 1st century BC to 1st century AD date The cast terminal is of near-circular, globular form and is incomplete, missing the integral shaft (with a surviving length of 16.4mm and a weight of 24.7g). At the apex is a circular recessed cell (3.6mm diameter and 1.2mm deep), which retains remnants of red enamel of red ‘sealing-wax’ type. Around the cell is a prominent raised ring border (2.1mm wide and giving an external diameter of 8.8mm). The top of the ring is corroded but appears to have been enhanced with a groove near its …

An incomplete cast copper alloy Iron Age or Roman mount dating to the period c. 300BC - AD 100. It is possibly a decorative shield clip, although it has also been suggested that this type of mount derives from a bucket, tankard or vessel. As this example contains remnants of iron decay in its interior, it has been suggested that it may originate from a bucket style vessel, akin to those of the Aylesford Swarling type (J. Ahmet pers.comm). It is formed of a single sheet of copper alloy which is now tubular in shape. It has a series of curving ridges which give it a sligh…

An Iron Age copper alloy mount, possibly from a tankard with zoomorphic decoration dating to 100 BC to 80 AD. The mount is a probably cast sheet of copper alloy, semi circular in plan and curved in cross section such that the two corners of the semi-circular are further back than the centre. There are three holes, one near each corner and one near the lowest point of the curve. The holes are slightly irregular, in particular the lower one which is larger and possibly worn. The back is plain. The front has a recessed cell with a curved base and two lobes in the upper part with a unr…

An incomplete possible escutcheon (handle fitting) or mount. The object is subcircular with a deep recess on either face. The side is partially decorated with three grooves containing traces of red enamel. Date: Iron Age - c. Dimensions: 13.95 mm x 10.96 x 8.95 mm Weight: 5.53 g This is similar to objects recorded in database records NMGW-6A53C4 and BH-2CA0D5, but less elaoborate. Julian Watters noted "Parallels for this object are illustrated and discussed by Spratling (1972: 222 - 223/fig. 177, nos. 386 - 388), who identifies them as handle escutcheons from metal bowls made…

It is possibly a decorative shield clip, although it has also been suggested that this type of mount derives from a bucket, tankard or vessel. The mount consists of a hollow tubular sheet of copper alloy decorated with a pair of moulded ridges at each end, with two further curving ridges which meet at their apex to create an X shape in the centre. Between the arms on either side is a triangular moulding. Cf. SWYOR-5C5FB5 for a similar example on the database. A parallel is shown in Pa…
