A cast copper alloy Birdlip brooch of late Iron Age date. The brooch measures 54.2mm in length and weighs 12.4g. The integral sprung pin has broken off the oval upper bow. Part way down the bow there is a moulded transverse projecting disc and below this a further moulded projection which curves upwards and narrows to bluntly pointed terminal. Below this the bow narrows gradually into a plain rounded foot. On the back of the lower part of the bow is the incomplete flat catchplate, which has two cut-out sections. The brooch is similar to an example from Guildford, Surrey in Hattatt's 'V…

Object type: MINIATURE OBJECT
Broad period: IRON AGE

Half of a silvered cast copper alloy miniature snaffle bit of probable late Iron Age to early Roman date. The miniature bit measures 35.4mm by 27.8mm by 6.6mm and weighs 4.8g. It is broadly cross-shaped, with a small jump ring in a different cooper alloy which links to a perpendicular loop at the end of the shortest arm of the cross. At the opposite end there is a another slightly larger perpendicular loop. This would have linked with the other half of the bit, which would have been identical with the exception of the orientation of the corresponding loop. The terminals of the other tw…

A copper alloy ring of probable Iron Age or Early Roman date, c. 800 BC - AD 100. A simple undecorated ring, circular in plan and oval in cross section, with a slightly off-centre circular perforation 6.2mm in diameter. Dimensions: diameter 15.7mm; thickness 4.5mm; weight 3.65g. Although obviously largely undiagnostic, the grey-green patina of the object would suggest an Iron Age or Roman date range, with a number of similarly plain rings excavated in Camerton, Somerset (Jackson 1990: plt. 15, nos. 157-161). As is noted for HAMP-6D6A91, the size of the aperture relative to the t…

An Iron Age copper alloy mount, possibly from a tankard with zoomorphic decoration dating to 100 BC to 80 AD.
