A silver Iron Age quarter stater of the South Western region / Durotriges, dating to the period c.60-20 BC, Duro Boat Bird type. Obverse: 'Three men in a boat' design, pellet rosette to left. A Late Iron Age to Early Roman copper alloy hinged strip bow brooch, probably dating to AD 25-70. The brooch survives largely complete, missing only its axis bar and pin. The head of the brooch survives to a width of 10.3mm, it consists of a rectangular sheet of copper alloy with a central slot to accomodate a hinged pin, this is rolled around underneath itself to form a cylindrical casing for an axis bar, now lost. An unidentified copper alloy object, probably of Early Iron Age date. The object is irregular in plan, consisting of a central triangular element, oval in cross section and with a concave socket at its mouth. There is a pronounced V-shaped indentation on either face at the opening. From either edge of the central socketed-element expands a C-shaped projection. An incomplete Iron Age La Tene I brooch, probably dating to c. 400-200 BC. The surviving brooch comprises of the bow and partial spring, with the foot, pin and part of the spring all missing. At the head of the brooch is an integral spring coiled around a copper alloy axis bar, a fragment of which survives in situ. Two left coils of the spring survive, with the chord, any further coils and pin all missing. The head of the brooch survives to a width of 7.4mm, the coils being 8.2mm in diameter. The following comments are from Ian Leins, British Museum: 'The stater was produced in Dorset, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and surrounding counties in about 80 - 50 BC. It is published in the major catalogues of Iron Age coinage (details below). The front is an abstract design apparently based on a boat. The back is even more abstract, making it difficult to determine the original inspiration for the design, although it is often described as a 'thunderbolt'.
