A complete gilded copper-alloy early-medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) mount, perhaps from a shield-boss apex, possibly from a horse's harness. It consists of a circular copper-alloy plate with a raised beaded border around the outside of the outer face and raised chip-carved Style II zoomorphic interlace decoration in the centre, with a central circular recess on the front and two concentric recessed circles around it. There is evidence of gilding on the face, The reverse is covered with a thick layer of corroded iron, but has two raised ribs which could be the ends of two copper-…

Copper alloy mount. Cast oval plate with four teardrop-shaped hollows on its display side, one now open, and with the stubs of three integrally cast prongs on the back. The integral prongs would usually point to a post-medieval date. However, the reddish cast to the metal, the worn surface condition and the – for that later period – unusual form may rather point to an Anglo-Scandinavian context for this object. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 950-1050 Length: 33.5mm, Width: 18.9mm, Thickness (clear of rivets): 1.9mm, Weight: 5.33gms

Copper alloy and iron mount. Cast copper alloy plate with concentric moulded decoration, of thickness 1.8mm at its outer edge. The decoration comprises, described from the centre outwards: a plain flat central boss, a gutter separating the boss from a thin and possibly cabled strand and continuing beyond it; a thicker cabled band in a gutter with a further narrow strand beyond it; and finally a plain flat border. Gilding traces are trapped in the relief of the decoration. The back bears the corroded stub of a ferrous metal fixing pin. Suggested date: probably Early Medieval, 410-850 D…

A fragment of an Early Medieval copper alloy rectangular mount, c.AD 500-700. This is a fragment of a rectangular mount with raised zoomorphic decoration. The mount is sub-rectangular in plan with flat faces. The upper surface has a plain border, with an one- to three-stranded interlaced zoomorphic decoration in the form of at least one creature. The ends and sides are damaged and end in old breaks. Gilding survives on the upper surface. The reverse is flat and undecorated with little of the patina surviving.

A  late Early medieval copper alloy object, probably a mount with a suggested 11th century date. The mount consists of a sub-rectangular plate with a rectangular cross section and a possible worn break at the rounded end. One end of the plate terminates in a moulded trefoil design with central lobe and lateral long curving leaves, one of which is has lost its end to a worn break. Beyond this the plate becomes slightly waisted at the centre before expanding again terminating in a rounded edge. The plate is cast with an openwork design with five a…

An Early Medieval Anglo-Scandinavian cast copper alloy zoomorphic openwork mount dating to the 11th century.  The mount is sub-rectangular with rounded ends. One end is broken.  The reverse side of the mount is concave and the upper face is rounded.  It has an openwork design, the holes having been cut after casting the thick plate; some holes remain as uncut recesses. On the upper face is an openwork interlace design inspired by the late Viking Urnes style, but very devolved. The design is hard to read, but may have zoomorphic elements. The…

A cast copper alloy mount, taking the form of a stud with an integral spike. This is most likely of either Early Medieval or of Post-Medieval date. The mount consists of a flat plate which is circular in plan. The outer face is gilded over the top of a moulded concentric design. This takes the form of a flat raised central circle; around this a recessed band housing a narrower cabled ring; and beyond this a flat raised outer edge. Most of the front of the mount is still covered with gilding, but a dark green patina is evident underneath this as well as on the ungilded back and spike.…

A near complete Early Medieval cast copper alloy and gilded belt mount, buckle plate or other strap fitting dating to AD 500-600. The mount consists of a flat panel that is rectangular in plan and section, and on its front has a high relief border along the edges. Within this rectangular border is a design, also in cast high relief, depicting what looks like a figure of eight with a double twist at its centre. One of the loops, assumed to be the uppermost, is larger than the other, and contains a raised sub-circular shape within it. If the design is interpreted as anthro…

An incomplete copper alloy mount dating from the middle Early Medieval period, around AD 700 - 900. The mount is sub-rectangular with a C scrolled convex terminal at one end, and is broken along a concave line at the other end. The middle is narrower with straight sides. The centre is a recessed panel filled with chip-carved single line interlace filling the space. The raised border has a two line spiral at each end of the C scroll shape, and similar smaller spirals on the broken edges. The narrower areas of border between the spirals are decorated with single line crescents. In t…

Copper alloy possible mount fragment. Cast straight-sided plate with a collared rounded end with a rivet or other copper alloy inset; if indeed a mount the object is presumably broken at its narrower end. There is the suspicion of a stepped [at expanded end] and partly keeled form [towards the putative broken end] to the display side, though no section views were available to confirm this point. Copper alloy mount. A thin straight-sided plate of possibly plano-convex section with incised linear decoration on its display side, plain on the flat back, with a rivet passing through a drilled hole towards one end. Bent and broken at the broader end, probably across a further fixing point and perhaps by rough removal from its setting. The source record suggests this could be 'an early medieval pin shank [probably]', an identification for which this reporter sees scant reason. Copper alloy mount. Cast chip-carved mount with a thin layer of rust covering large areas but not obscuring the nature of decoration. The rust probably comes from the iron rivets which once attached the mount to an important object. The back is plain. This is probably from an ecclesiastical context [cf. Whitby parallels] such as a book cover or a shrine. Another part of the same object was reported from Melton Ross, making this a ‘find of note’ for its significance in tracking the members of a single Viking raiding party. An accompanying text extract suggests an ‘8th …

An incomplete, copper alloy object, possibly a mount of brooch foot of Early Medieval date (c. AD 510-570). The object is sub-rectangular in plan with a worn break on the upper edge. The bottom of the face is domed and has a very worn design which features a cross in the centre and a chip-carved motif surrounding. The motif appears to be similar to that of WAW-347449, and likely consists of three concentric circles between the arms of the cross with a band of radiating lines on either side of the lower end of the cross. Around the object there is a double raised border extending …
