Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An early Medieval copper alloy buckle frame with integral plate. The frame is 'D' shaped. The sides of the frame appear to be formed from the necks of two creatures, which culminate in stylised heads that grip the ends of the bar in their teeth. The outer edges of the necks each have two raised bumps, but further detail is difficult to make out. The outer edge of the end of the buckle frame extends to a blunt point, the sides of which curve inwards very slightly. This points appears to have been decorated, although this is now obscured by corrosion. The reverse is undecorated. The …

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire

Complete Early-Medieval gilded copper alloy 'axe-shaped' mount, probably from horse harness. The mount is trapezoidal in shape; the longest side curves outwards slightly, whilst the other three sides curve inwards. The reverse of the mount is flat and covered with iron corrosion. The outer face of the mount has engraved decoration, the lines of which are gilded. Helen Geake (pers. comm.), the Scheme's Medieval and Post-Medieval Finds Advisor, comments that the decoration appears to be Style I rather than the Style II common on this type of mount. She notes that the design is 'entir…

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Early-Medieval hooked tag. Sub-triangular in shape, with two holes at the attachment end. This end of the tag is missing, the break running through the centre of the holes. There is a small knop to either side of the base of the hook, but the hook itself is missing. Both of the longer sides are slightly damaged. The outer face is decorated with eight ring and dot motifs arranged lengthways - a central row of four with two to either side. The tag appears to belong to Read's (2008, p.7) Class A, Type 1, which he dates to c.7th to early 12th century. Read (ibid. pp.9-10) il…

An in incomplete Early-Medieval copper alloy mount with inlaid gold and silver decoration. The mount is roughly octagonal in shape, the outer edge formed from four straight lines, with four inward curving lines between them. The mount is slightly domed, with a concave reverse. In the centre of the reverse is a small, integral, pointed rivet. The outer face is divided into cells (nine in total) by raised bands inlaid with silver. Four semi-circular cells curving inwards from each of the straight sides and joining a square cell in the very centre. Between the four corner cells are small…

Copper alloy stirrup-strap mount. A sub-triangular mount, decorated with the raised imaged of a lion looking upwards, with its right foreleg raised and tail curled above its body, all within a riased outer border. The mane is formed from two rows of irregular indentations. Below the lion, the border is slightly thicker and is pierced with two attachment holes (with traces of iron corrosion around them to the reverse). The reverse of the mount is undecorated and has a central 'common right-angled flange' (Williams 1997, p.25), protruding from the lower edge, which is shorter than the w…

Copper alloy object, possibly a strip mount for a casket according to Geoff Egan (pers. comm.). It has a short stem, with the remains of a rivet just before the terminal. The other end does appear likely to be a break (though it is well rounded) as there is a small indentation in its center, which seems likely to be the remains of a rivet hole. The terminal consists of a short section with a semi-circular void in its centre and two small protrusions either side of this on the outer edge. Above this, at a very slight outwards angle, extends two prongs with several further protrusions ar…

Incomplete cast copper alloy Early-Medieval single sharp-hooked clasp. What remains is sub-triangular in shape, with a break at the wider end that has become rounded over time. There is a thin integral hook extending from the pointed end, though the majority of this is now missing. The front face of the clasp is decorated with a band running along the outside edge and within this an interlaced pattern that is now partially obscured by errosion and damage. Read (2007. p.7) has categorised such clasps as class A, type 2. He (ibid.) dates such clasps to the c.7th-early 12th century. …

Incomplete cast copper alloy Early-Medieval to Medieval single sharp-hooked clasp. What remains is sub-triangular in shape, with a thin integral hook extending outwards slightly and then under from the point at the base. The hook is now slightly bent out of shape. The front face of the clasp is decorated with a band running along the outside edge and within this a geometric pattern that is now partially obscured by errosion and damage. Copper alloy Early-Medieval one-piece hooked tag. The tag is sub-circular in form; slightly flattened at the top and tapering slightly at the bottom above the hook. The hook itself is now missing, all that remains is a tiny protrusion at the base of the tag. The tag has two holes adjacent to one another at the other end to the hook, but appears to be otherwise undecorated. However, the surface is highly pitted with erosion meaning that any decoration could have been lost. Read (2008, p.5) suggests that such tags are likely to have been in use from the 9th to early 11th centuries (or ev…

Cast copper alloy Early-Medieval openwork stirrup-strap mount. The mount is roughly lozenge shaped with a flat bottom and a circular loop at the apex. This loop appears to have been pierced, but is now filled with dirt and erosion. The main body of the mount has four lozenge shaped holes, arranged to create a diagonal cross in the centre. Williams (1997, pp.69-75) has categorised such mounts as class A, type 12. Similar examples may be seen in his work 'Late Saxon Stirrup-Strap Mounts', particularly numbers 312 -333 (ibid.pp.71-75). These typically have a series of raised bosses in th…

Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Incomplete cast copper alloy fitting, probably from an Early-Medieval harness or bit link, or cheek piece. The link consists of an oval loop with a bar attached to one side. The loop is rounded above and flattened below. The bar is ā€˜Dā€™ shaped in cross section, bulging outwards slightly to form a boss at the end furthest from the loop. Beyond this is a break where the link would have attached to another similar section. Williams (2008, 4) points out that Early-Medieval harness links characteristically have three small knops on the outer edge of both loops. The lack of any such decor…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Early Medieval strap-end (Thomas class A). Long and thin in shape with a sub-hexagonal cross-section. The body widens slightly below the top, before going in again towards the bottom. There is a break at the attachment end, where the object would have been split to hold a strap. The front is decorated with a raised pattern. However, this is too obscured by compacted dirt for the design to be determined. The visible metal has a dark green patina. It is difficult to classify this strap-end further because the decoration cannot be seen. Thomas dates cla…
