Object type: WHETSTONE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
These items form part of a collection of 60 sherds of Roman and Medieval pottery and other finds that were submitted for identification in November 2009.
The two whetstones that were submitted are, like the nails very hard to date without contextual information. Whetstones have been in use for many hundreds of years. On whetstone is perforated, probably for suspension; this practice was not common during the Roman period. These whetstones may date anywhere from the post Roman period (AD 410) into the post-medieval period.

A very fine early medieval polished whetstone pendant, made from a light black stone. There is a suspension hole at the top which has been pierced fom both sides to give a clean even finish. There are numerous shallow linear scores visible on both sides of the whetstone. This whetstone was probably used for the final finishing sharpening rather than the initial sharpening.
The whetstone measures 76.50mm long, 13.91mm wide and 6.89mm thick. It weighs 15 grams.

A cast copper alloy Early-medieval hanging bowl mount or escutcheon, dating to the 7th century AD. The mount is in extremely good condition, and is one of the best examples recorded on this database. The mount is circular and convexed, with an intricate design of a group of three winding tendrils flowing out from a central circle, know as the classic four-spiral trumpet design (Bruce-Mitford 2005:14). A suspension arm has been soldered onto the reverse of the escutcheon. This would have ended in a small loop (now missing) that a large ring would fit into to enable it to be attached to…

A small decorated body sherd of later Early-medieval pottery. The sherd has a grey inner and brown outer fabric and is tempered with crushed stone. The decoration consists of a waved comb design of four lines or prongs. The decoration and fabric suggests a late early-medieval to medieval date, and is possibly Saxo-Norman in origin, dating from c. 850-1150 AD. Other finds in the vacinity suggest a similar date.

A broken rim sherd from a late Anglo-Saxon Oxford Shelly Ware vessel, dating from the 10th or 11th century AD. The sherd has suffered a recent break enabling the fabric to be seen; this consists of abundant small shell pieces within a dark grey matrix. The rim itself is rounded and worn; the curve of the rim suggets a pot of c. 20cm diameter.

Description: A complete silver object, with an iron infill on the reverse. It consists of a semi-circular loop with a central rectangular aperture, beneath which extends a short narrowed neck which in turn joins an inverted triangular-shaped body. The upper surfaces of all three elements are rounded, but the reverses are differently shaped; the loop has a hollowed reverse, the neck is very slightly dished, and the reverse of the triangular part is flat. The loop and the triangular body of the mount have zoomorphic relief decoration, but the neck is undecorated.
The apex of the tria…

A small circular disc made from gold foil, possibly of early Anglo-Saxon date. The disc has been stamped on one side with an unclear impression in the centre, including linear motifs but difficult to identify with certainty due to the crumpled condition of the artefact. The design is enclosed by a border of pellets. Only just visible to the naked eye, but clear with the use of a glass, are multiple incised lines running circumferentially around the outer edge of the foil. There is no obvious hook or tab on any part of the edge for suspension or attachment.
This disc superficially r…

A sheet copper alloy sword pommel, probably dating to the early-medieval period. The pommel is made from one sheet of copper alloy that has been folded from a flat rectangular base up and over into triangular profiled pommel with a rectangular cross section. The pommel is filled with a lead alloy substance, giving the object quite some weight for its size. The folds of the pommel do not quite touch each other and the lead infill has leached out. Through the centre of the pommel is the remains of an iron rivet or pin; possibly the remains of the tang but with a small diameter. Although…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) sword pommel cap of 'cocked hat' type, dating to c. AD 400-600.
The cap is rectangular in plan and pyramidal in form with sloping corners. It is concave on the underside. At each side the longer sections are now broken and lost but would have extended and housed rivet holes to secure the cap to the top of the pommel. No decoration can be seen on the pommel cap. Copper-alloy pommel caps are fairly regular embellishments on Anglo-Saxon swords (MacGregor and Bolick 1993:237). Pommel caps were to secure the pommel and to form a…

A complete copper alloy hollow-cast sword pommel, dating to the late early-medieval period, c. 10th-11th century AD. The pommel is broadly triangular in plan and is of 'lobed' form. It consists of five rounded and curved lobes that increase in size towards the centre. The central lobe has a sub-circular aperture through which the tang of the sword would have originally passed. The underside of the object has an elongated oval opening which curves upwards towards the outer edges. There are no rivets on the pommel, which suggests it was held in place simply by the hammered tang. …

An Anglo-Scandinavian socketed fitting with hook, possibly a strap or harness fitting and comprising a tapering openwork socketed body with cruciform boss in the centre at the open end of the socket and an elongated slot down both sides. The fitting has a narrowed solid terminal with hook. The front of the fitting has the remains of Ringerike style decoration although this is worn. The exact function of these objects remains uncertain, but they may be a form of harness junction as they appear to have been made to carry or secure considerable weight / strain. Other examples can be foun…

An incomplete Late Early-medieval (11th century) cast copper-alloy strap-fitting of the 'socketed hook' type, probably from a strap distributor. A cast copper-alloy probable strap fitting dating to the late Early-medieval period, c. 11th century AD. The fitting consists of a ring with a thick D-shaped hoop and convex oval bezel. The oval head is decorated with four very worn triangular grooves arranged in saltire, giving a wide-armed cross appearance. At the opposite side to the bezel and directly beneath the hoop widens and thickens. There are several similar objects recorded on the database (see SUR-552D78), but their use remains somewhat speculative. The fitting has affinities with late Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-Scandinavian 'so…

A complete but worn cast copper-alloy hooked strap fitting of later Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) date. It has a moulded quatrefoil boss that has opposing vertical rectangular bars that join the base of the open-mouthed and openwork socket in a sub-rectangular arm, while another arm extends from the front of the boss. The broadly circular socket mouth tapers towards the hooked terminal, which is enclosed. There may be the remains of Ringerike decoration on the upper surface of the fitting, but this is now worn and indistinct.

An incomplete copper alloy strap fitting or possible buckle plate dating to the Early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) period. In its current form the strap fitting is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and has moulded Style I decoration, comprising elements of intertwined beasts. There are two or three openwork elements to the fitting. The reverse is flat, plain and undecorated. An object of similar form and decoration is illustrated in West et al. (1998:250 fig. 132.1) and is identifed as a buckle plate, as it retains two loops for the buckle bar. This is also not symmetrical and appears to be a…
