An incomplete and damaged cast copper alloy hooked tag dating to the early-medieval period. The fastener is broadly ovoid in plan with the remaining short stem of the projecting hook located at the narrow base of the main body. The upper, rounder end of the fastener is broken but may have been heart-shaped, or could have had projecting knops. The entire surface of the fastener is decorated with punched ring-and-dot motifs, all of which are slightly uneven and out of alignment with one another. There is the remains of a white metal coating evident. The reverse of the fastener is plain …

A fragment of a silver dress fastener or hooked tag of early-medieval date. The fragment comprises maybe a third of the tag, retaining one of the two attachment lugs. The tag is decorated with an animal (possibly a horse or a bull?) in Trewhiddle style, with interlace below the animal's stomach. An outer border of irregular pellets is bound by two continuous lines. Similar objects are classed as Read (2008) Class D or E - because the hook is missing it is not possible to discern which class this example belongs to. However the size and decoration suggests a 9th century date. A similar …

A nearly complete cast copper alloy hooked tag of Read's (2008) Class A Type 1, triangular type dating to the early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) period. The hooked tag would have had two attachement holes in the upper corners of the widest part of the triangle, unlike many that Read illustrates that have three. However one of the top corners is broken and missing, otherwise the hooked tag is complete with a backward curving hook at the narrow end. The hooked tag is decorated on one side only, with a plume of three feather-like objects set above an indistinct design. The reverse is plain and…

A complete copper alloy hooked tag dating to the early-medieval period. The hooked tag has a circular plate with two protruding rounded pierced lobes above for attachment. The edge of the plate is decorated with a linear border with multiple transverse lines within, giving the effect of a ladder or rope pattern. A cast copper alloy hooked tag or clasp, dating to the Early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) period. The hooked tag is roughly triangular in plan and is made from one thin sheet of copper alloy; the one piece tag would have had two eyelets (one is now broken) at one end and a simple tapering hook at the other; this is also missing. There is a thin incised line as decoration around the outher edge of the tag limited to one face only. These are some of the earliest hooked tags and date from the 7th century and throughout the Anglo-Saxon period, becoming more elaborate as time goes on. Read (2008…

A copper-alloy hooked tag. It has a broadly rectangular body with stepped neck into a sharp curved hook that has a rectangular cross-section. There is an open sub-rectangular area towards the top of the main body where the tag would have been attached (probably sewn) to clothing, a bag or similar. The front of the tag is decorated with neatly spaced multiple punched annulets over the body and down onto the neck. The reverse is undecorated. The hooked tag is complete and in very good condition. From its lightweight construction and punched decoration, the tag probably dates to the e…
