Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy mount or fitting of probable 11th century date. The mount has a central bar with triangular terminals, boradly 'bow-tie' shaped. It has rivet holes on the outer corners of both terminals, and is flat in section. The mount is poorly preserved, suffering from extensive surface corrosion, however the outline of the raised decoration can still be seen. The decortation appears to consist of a round device with a cross over and extending beyond its confines. This is repeated at the opposing terminal. A double linear, or pillar, connects the two circular features. A ver…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An Early Medieval cast copper alloy stirrup terminal of zoomorphic design consisting of a stylised crested animal, possibly a type of bird. The back of the mount would have formed a hollow tube to house the lower part of the stirrup, however the tube is now missing with an old, worn break on the surviving section of the terminal. The terminal is incomplete with only a small part of the hollow tube remaining. The terminal is worn, and has a dull reddish-brown patina. Similar example of this object have a crest that extends down the neck of the animal - on this example only a small port…
