A gold mount or setting, comprising an oval-shaped gold sheet with a slightly concave form. The front of the mount is decorated with an incised cruciform motif inlaid with niello. The cross consists of vertical and horizontal arms, roughly equal in length. In the centre, encircling the crossing-point of the arms, is a circle from which extend four additional lines forming a saltire motif between the main arms of the cross. Near the end of each main cross-arm is a crescent line that enhances the inner saltire motif. The back of the mount is plain with some heavy scratches and patche…

A gold Merovingian tremissis of the Nietap type (from Frisia), dating to circa 630-40. The coin is small, circular, 6mm in diameter and 3mm thick. The rim of the flan is irregularly-shaped, showing irregular panels caused by the initial casting of the flan or by secondary hammering. The obverse bears the motif of a double cross, formed of a single vertical strokes with two crossing bars or, if viewed at 90 degrees, like an H with a single horizontal stroke and two vertical bars. The tips of each bar are expanded to form a sub-triangular terminal. Around this central double-cross motif…

Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate gold content for the ingot of 43%, and 29% for silver the remainder being copper; the ingot weighs 39.0 grams. The ingot is bar-shaped and hammered to a square section with rounded edges; length, 61mm; width, 9mm; thickness, 8mm. There is a nick in the centre of one edge and there are both fine and coarse abrasions on the surfaces. The metal content of the ingot is not particularly consistent with it being from the Viking period, but would not be out of place for either the Iron Age or Medieval …

Dimensions: External diameter: 11mm, internal diameter: 6mm. Width 6mm. Weight 4.51g. Treasure reference 2013 T188: A gold Viking pendant in the form of 'Thor's hammer'. The pendant is in the form of a double-headed hammer with an elongated pentagonal head. The head is rectangular in cross-section. From the centre of the head extends an integral tapering rectangular-sectioned shaft. The terminal of the shaftis narrowed to form a suspension loop. Description: Gold Latin cross made with long arm uppermost. The cross is hollow and its structure complex. It is made up with one cruciform sheet, which extends into the suspension loop, acting as a base-plate. A single strip of gold, set on edge, is neatly soldered to this forming a cruciform cell. This is then covered by second sheet of gold whose edges are partially enfolded by the top of the cell wall. Four gold items of Anglo-Saxon jewellery dating to the seventh century AD, all probably from a single necklace which has in turn probably come from a ploughed-out or disturbed inhumation burial. All four items were discovered in an area measuring approximately 3m x 3m. Items 1 and 2 - the beads Items 1 and 2 are gold biconical beads that are identical in shape, size and decoration. Each one was probably made from two pieces of gold sheet, bent around to form slightly flaring cones; the seam is visible under the microscope on one of the beads. The halves have been soldered to…

An Anglo-Saxon gold pendant of the seventh century. The pendant was originally flat and oval but is now bent. The pendant originally had a setting (which is likely to have been of cabochon-cut garnet or glass) held in place by way of a narrow internal lip on the front. The lip is an extension of the back-plate, folded up and decorated with two bands of beaded filigree soldered onto the surface. The outer band has larger pellets than the inner band. A narrow, ribbed suspension loop extends from the top on the reverse but is now damaged and bent backwards on itself. This loop is soldere…

A fragment of decorated gold sheet. The fragment is flat and tapers from 9mm to 8mm in width. The tapering edges are original; either end is broken. The broken edges are rough and do not look as if they have been intentionally cut to size. One side is decorated with stamped reversed 'S'-shaped motifs. Each 'S'-shaped motif is made from six or seven tapering or sub-triangular punchmarks. The fragment is of uncertain age and function, but is of a style that would suggest it is over 300 years old. The field on which the gold fragment was found has also produced large quantities of Roman …

A flat piece of sheet gold decorated with very worn gold filigree. The object is now roughly triangular, with each edge probably having been cut to size. The object is decorated with four small annulets of beaded wire, and single and double lines and swirls again of beaded wire, soldered onto one face of the sheet to form an irregular design which is difficult to interpret. Similar decorative features are also seen on plated sword pyramids (eg Newark, Notts TAR 1998-9, no. 62), which would seem more appropriate for the thinness of the present object. This fragment is in some ways…
