A fragmentary silver unidentified object probably of Early Medieval date, about AD 410 - 1066. It is a rectangular strip of metal, broken at both ends, with parallel original edges. One face is decorated with a double row of irregular punched or stamped rounded dots along each original edge. Running along the centre is a guilloche pattern of repeated S shaped recesses, each one seemingly formed from a number of individual circular stamps. An incomplete Early Medieval Arabic coin: a fragment of a silver dirham probably dating from about AD 750 - 950. Ruler and mint uncertain. Coins of this type are known to have circulated across Europe during the later Early Medieval period and have been found as part of Viking hoards discovered in England. They are often found with other objects which suggest an Early Medieval trading site, so this fragment could be ancient loss. Dirhams can also be an indicator of a Viking Great Army camp site. The coin appears to be broken rather than cut or hacked for use as bullion. It is…

A lead probable spindle whorl of Early Medieval date, about AD 700 - 850, of Walton Rogers form A2. It is sub-circular, with two flat faces of different sizes. The central hole is 6.6mm diameter, though a little distorted on the smaller face. It is 18.3mm long, 16.6mm wide and 9.8mm thick. 14.4g.
Walton Rogers suggests that Form A2 whorls date from AD 700 - 100, while those with a central perforation of 6-9mm are more likely to be early to mid Saxon.

Similar objects such as LEIC-F39697 and LIN-6BFDEB have been identified as Viking gaming pieces. This identification is more secure when the piece has a decorated top such as crenelations or a crown. LEIC-F39697 cites LEIC-07629A, NCL-FBC856 and SWYOR-13C8D1 notes that similarly shaped objects bu…

A lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form A1, probably dating from AD 500 - 850. It has one flat face, which has some areas which are slightly concave, and one rounded face, making it D-shaped in cross-section (plano-convex). There is a central circular aperture which has a diameter of 8.1mm. It is 32.7mm in diameter, 9.6mm thick, and has a mass of 42.4g. It has a rough cream and brown patina with some dark grey concretion on the flat face.
Form A1 whorls are dated by Walton Rogers to AD 500 - 1000, but the size of the central hole suggests an early to middle Saxon date.

A broken and incomplete silver Early Medieval (AD 800 - 950) Trewhiddle style strap end of Thomas Class A, Type 1axiv, depicting two animals with entwined bodies.
It is sub-rectangular in shape with gently convex sides that taper towards the terminal, now lost, along with the lower part of the plate. The attachment end is split to take a strap, and pierced for the addition of two rivets. One rivet survives. It is silver and has a round flat head, and a square sectioned shank. The shape of the split end is lobed around these rivets and the edges are slightly damaged.

A cast lead spindle whorl of probable Early Medieval to Medieval date, about AD 700 - 1100. It is probably of Walton Rogers form A2 with flat faces of different sizes and rounded sides (but it could possibly be form A1). The sides and flat face are covered with small irregular indentations, but these do to appear to be intentional decoration. It is 20.6mm in diameter and 10mm thick, with a central circular perforation 5.7mm in diameter. It weighs 16.1g. It has a well developed white patina.

It is 24.9mm in diameter and 9.8mm thick, with a central circular perforation 9.6mm in diameter. It weighs 25.06g. It has a well developed yellow/cream patina and is a little lopsided.
Walton Rogers suggests that form A2 whorls date from AD 700 - 1100. The size of the diameter of the central hole is greater than 9mm, so could suggest a date in the later end of the range given, Late Saxon to Medieval (AD 850 - 1100).

A fragment of a circular copper alloy plaque, probably a mount from an Early Medieval hanging bow dating from AD 600 - 725. The object is less than a quarter of a probably circular object. It is also possible that it is a weight. If so then the mass would suggest half an ounce in the Troy or Apothecaries' weight systems, an ounce being 31.1g, (The Medieval Household, G. Egan, page 302 ). This would date it to the 14th or 15th centuries.
