A cast lead alloy spindle whorl, of possible Early Medieval date, from AD 500 to AD 1000. It is plano-convex in shape and has a sub-circular, central perforation with a diameter of 6.4mm. It is undecorated. The whorl has a flaky grey patina. It is 22.9mm in diameter and 12mm thick. It weighs 29.99gm but has some chips. This shape can be classified as Coppergate type A1 which was used from the 6th century onwards. The size of the central perforation is also consistent with an Early Medieval date (Walton Rogers, page 24), but these features may also have continued into later periods.
