A fragmentary silver unidentified object probably of Early Medieval date, about AD 410 - 1066. It is a rectangular strip of metal, broken at both ends, with parallel original edges. One face is decorated with a double row of irregular punched or stamped rounded dots along each original edge. Running along the centre is a guilloche pattern of repeated S shaped recesses, each one seemingly formed from a number of individual circular stamps. Together they form the impression of a rope-like two strand twist or interlace pattern. The reverse is plain. The sheet is bent at one end, befo…

A copper alloy unidentified object, possibly a mount, of Early Medieval to Medieval date, about AD 1000 - 1200. It is in Anglo-Scandinavian zoomorphic Urnes style, but it is not clear what function the object had. It consists of a sub-rectangular tapering bar which terminates in a moulded animal's head, ears flat against the bar, with bulbous eyes and a square snout. Projecting from the beast's snout is a wide openwork sub-circular plate in decorated in Urnes style with oval apertures and faint incised lines. None of the edges appears to b broken, and nor does the square (wider) en…

A rectanglular fragment of possible hack gold, probably of Early Medieval date, AD 450 - 1066. The fragment is broken at both ends and perhaps along one long edge. The remaining side is complete and is slightly wavy but essentially has square corners. The piece is slightly curved in cross-section. The convex face is marked with deep longitudinal scratches. The concave reverse is smooth except for some scratches and cracks near the broken long edge. It is a deep golden colour and is 11.8mm long, 7.1mm wide and 1.4mm thick. 0.74g. Normally a fragment of this nature would be considere…

An incomplete silver artefact, probably a terminal from a larger object, in the form of a stylised, three-dimensional animal's head. It is roughly circular in section and broken off at one end. Paperwork accompanying the artefact states that the object 'broke into 2 pieces post-discovery, subsequently repaired with glue'. The repair is behind the animal's ears. The animal's head is elongated and curves subtly downwards towards the snout. The creature has two pricked leaf-shaped ears, one of which is damaged. Behind the ears part of the neck survives (now repaired),…

Description: A bent strip of gold wire. The wire ranges from 1.2mm to 1.7mm in diameter and is sub-circular in cross-section with many flat facets, suggesting that the wire was hand-made by hammering. The ends are both half cut on an angle, and half broken. The wire is wider at one end and gradually tapers along the whole length. Dimensions: The wire is currently bent and twisted, now being 30.9mm long, but if straight would be about 45mm long. It weighs 1.13g. Discussion: The treatment of the ends (chisel-cut and then broken) is characteristic of Viking-age cutting of metal to …

A small piece of silver, probably Viking hacksilver dating from about AD 700 - 1100. It is from a known Early Medieval productive site. The piece is a rectangular strip of silver which is about 1mm thick. One end is rounded and the other end is cut obliquely. There is a small (2 by 0.8mm) hole punched through the rounded end. One face is decorated with stamped or recessed bands. One transverse band at the rounded end is interrrupted by the hole. This band tapers to a point at one end and is about 2mm wide but very shallow. Two similar bands form a cross (X) on the rest of the obj…

A lead alloy unidentified object of uncertain date, possibly a small vessel perhaps used as a bird feeder, which was found in the same field as the Early Medieval finds SWYOR-1590A4, SWYOR-14ED88, SWYOR-14A685, SWYOR-148980, SWYOR-146DF7, SWYOR-145073, SWYOR-142DD2, SWYOR-13FF91, SWYOR-EB7AA1 and SWYOR-EB10D8, so is possibly Early Medieval in date. The object is made of thick sheet lead alloy and is now flattened into a triangular shape but is hollow. Originally it may have been a conical vessel. There is a small flat area at the apex, probably acting as a base. This area is perfor…

A strip of silver; a fragment of an unidentified object. It is rectangular in plan and section, and bent at one end. The bent end is a worn break, but the other end seems complete. There is no decoration or evidence of attachment. The sides are square and complete. Though there is no evidence to date this object on the object itself, it comes from a known Early Medieval site, so it is likely to be Early Medieval in date. This object is probably more than 300 years old and is more than 10% silver so it meets the requirements of the 1996 Treasure Act.

A copper alloy fragment of an unidentified object, probably of Early Medieval date. It is roughly square, but all the edges are ancient breaks. The front face is decorated with deeply incised (chip-carved) designs, of which not enough survive to be able to explain the design. The reverse is plain and flat. The metal is an unusual colour, being buff coloured with a grey surface in places, though it does seem to be copper alloy rather than a lead alloy.

A copper alloy fragment of an unidentified object of probable Early Medieval date, possibly a plate from a strap end. The fragment is a plate of copper alloy which is roughly L shaped in plan, but was probably originally rectangular with a rectangular slot in the centre. The foot of the L is 10.88mm long and 5.88mm tall. The sides of the foot appear to be complete but the base has a chamfered edge which looks as if it may have been cut. The top is rough and broken at the right hand side where the now missing side of the object would have extended. At the left side of the foot of the L…

A fragment of an unidentified object made from cast gilded silver, apparently distorted, perhaps by heat. One element is part of a triple-strand circle, external diameter probably originally c. 16mm. The strands, or ridges, are separated by deep V-shaped grooves, reminiscent of early Anglo-Saxon chip-carving. The ridges are not particularly well made, some being flatter and wider and others being sharper; the gilding covers all, showing that this is not the result of wear. The triple-strand circle is crossed by a flat-topped ridge, now very worn and having lost most of its gilding, …

A tiny fragment of a silver unidentified object which is probably Early Medieval hacksilver. The fragment is sub rectangular and is broken at both ends, though one end may be almost complete. It is of varying thickness with three transverse facets on each of the two faces. Hacksilver fragments are normally attributed to the 9th or 10th century. This date is consistent with other finds from the same area. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

A copper alloy unidentified object probably dating from the 11th century. The object consists of a curved bar which is D shaped in section. One end is twisted and broken. At the other end is a very blocky and stylised animal head beyond which is a flat flared projecting terminal. This appears to be complete. The function of this zoomorphic object is not known, but David Williams comments that the style suggests an 11th century date. Another example on the database is DENO-5180D8. WILT-E79D16 also has some similarities, though it is not as angular. It is also possible that this is a c…

A copper alloy unidentified object probably dating from the Early Medieval period. A tapering spike, square in section has a square block at the top which has plate beyond it. The plate is formed of two integral lozenge shaped elements, each with projecting knobs are the corners, and a circular hole in the centre. There is a hollow on the reverse of the block. The block is also thicker than the other areas. In style, this seems similar to Anglo-Scandinavian harness fittings such as NMS-8A1851, NMS-3053A3 and LEIC-0DF1A3 which date from the 11th and 12th centuries, so a similar date is…

A copper alloy unidentified object of unknown date. The object is a curved bar which is circular in section at one end where it is also broken in antiquity, but which flattens and opens out into a flat triangular terminal at the other. It is 54.5mm long, 18.6mm wide and 11.7mm thick. Immediately before the terminal is a projecting zoomorphic head on one side of the bar only. There is also an incised chevron on the reverse where the terminal meets the bar. The object is pitted and corroded, but some areas of a deep brown glossy patina survive. Similar items are discussed in the January…
