A copper alloy buckle frame which is probably from the Early Medieval period, about AD 850 - 1000. It is probably a Borre style buckle. The frame is D-shaped with a pointed outer edge which is zoomorphic; it has a perhaps Borre-style animal head with curved ears projecting from the frame, incised eyes and a projecting snout forming the pointed terminal, but the details are obscured by corrosion. The bar is straight but narrowed. Two hinge loops project from the bar but the axis bar, plate and pin are missing. The buckle has patches of a bright green patina, but it has mostkly flaked of…

A silver buckle of late Early Medieval to Medieval date, about AD 800 - 1200. The decoration is perhaps of Carolingian style, or maybe Carolingian inspired Winchester style, or transitional from Urnes/Ringerike to more Medieval forms. The buckle has an expanded and angled outer edge and sides, which are chunky and deeply moulded. There is a narrow bar with a spiral knop at each end of the bar. The outer edge is decorated with a palmette or other foiliate design, rather like a fleur-de-lis, with three fronds projecting from a narrow waist, and four scroll ends exten…

A copper alloy buckle, possibly of Early Medieval to Medieval date, about AD 1000 - 1100. It is a single looped buckle with an expanded outer edge, decorated with three pointed lobes projecting from the outer edge. The outer two lobes are decorated with incised dots, a row of three across the frame on each lobe. The outer lobes are also flanked by grooves. There are also decorative lobes or serrations at each end of the bar, and also a raised dot on each side on the front of the frame. These are worn, but it is possible they are animal heads facing the strap. The sides of the frame ext…

A copper alloy fragmentary object, probably part of a flat buckle frame of later Early Medieval date, probably AD 900 - 1000. It is decorated with Borre style interlace and has a V shaped recess which could be a pin rest. The object is crescent shaped and broken at the ends. It is presumed to be the expanded outer edge from a buckle frame. The V shaped notch is in the centre of the inner edge so would be in the correct position for a pin rest. The design on each side is not symetrical. There is a bar in relief across the pointed end of the V, and a double curved line (probably chip…

Early Anglo-Saxon thick silver object set with a panel of cloisonné garnets with gold cell walls. Description: Sub-triangular three-dimensional object made from cast silver, with all edges curved (two concave and one convex). When held with the convex edge downwards, the object is curved in cross-section from side to side; the reverse is flatter, but has a C-shaped raised area following the convex edge with a sunken C-shaped centre which is part of the original casting. The effect is that of a horse's hoof. There is no obvious break, but there is an oval scar on top of the apex…

A cast copper alloy Early Medieval buckle dating from c. 900- 1100 AD. It is D-shaped in plan with a narrowed strap bar. The terminals of the loop are zoomorphic in form with the strap bar connecting two heads of animals; their mouths are open, almost as though they are biting the bar. These are stylised animals seen on various objects from this period and could be dogs/dragons/dolphins; it is difficult to see. They have a rounded head with inset eyes and an elongated snout. A corroded copper alloy probable buckle plate of probable Early Medieval date, about 650 - 850 AD. The plate is rectangular with worn and damaged edges. A copper alloy buckle probably dating from the Early Medieval period, most probably from 600 - 750 AD. The buckle has a D-shaped frame with a significantly expanded outer edge. This tapers as it curves round smoothly to the straight bar which is round in section and very slightly recessed. The outer edge is a rounded D shaped in section. There is no decoration and no trace of animal head terminals at the ends of the bar. A copper-alloy D-shaped buckle frame. The outer edge is D-shaped in cross-section, with devolved animal heads at each end of the bar (beast biting bar type). The bar is narrower than the frame and the outer edge of the frame is decorated with transverse grooves. The pin is missing but there is a groove to act as a pin rest. For reference see DENO-8E90B8, and Meols page 72 number 312. This type of buckle is thought from finds at Winchester and Norwich to be 11th or 12th century (Hinton in Biddle 1990, no. 1110; Margeson 1993, no. 127). Compare also SWYOR-EE9656 and SWYOR-4F8AB4.
