An early-medieval silver Merovingian (Frankish) denier, dating from c.675-750 (Belfort 5726-30). Ref: Belfort 1892: 207-8. The reverse of the coin matches those shown in Belfort nos. 5726-30 but the obverse is slightly harder to place, in part owing to its condition. The place in the sequence of deniers is difficult to assess but given that this coin is a little corroded it indicates that the silver content is not high, suggesting the coin should be…

It weighs 0.96g.

A medieval Islamic dirham fragment probably dating to the 9th century (3rd century AH). It is 13.8mm long, 6.9mm wide and 0.6mm thick. It weighs 0.32gm. There are very few Islamic coins recorded on the PAS database though they are found in Viking hoards. Dr Luke Treadewell (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford) comments: The top fragment has the marginal legend (...arsalahu bi al-hu)da wa (din al-haqq...), which is the standard reverse legend, meaning 'he (God) sent him with divine guidance and the true religion''.
