A gold terminal, possibly from a composite pin, dating to the early medieval period, AD 800 - 1000. The terminal comprises a hollow, spherical feature attached to a hollow tube, both made from thin gold sheet. The sphere is decorated with curvilinear filigree designs made from gold beaded wire. The ornament comprises a strand forming a median band around the sphere, dividing it into upper and lower hemispheres. The upper hemisphere has a small gold granule at the apex, from which spring four scrolls of beaded wire arranged in opposed pairs, each scroll terminating in its centre with a…

The coin is 12.8mm diameter, 0.7mm thick and 0.73g. The obverse is worn, and there is a slight crack in the flan. Discussion: The coin is the same type as SWYOR-62B752 (EMC 2012.0025), and struck from the same pair of dies. The two coins were found around 400 metres apart in the same field, and are currently the only recorded examples of this variety within the York series, which is itself …

An oval gold pendant set with a cabochon-cut red stone, presumably a garnet. The pendant is formed from a gold back-plate, frame and a suspension loop. The red stone setting is oval in plan, evenly-shaped and with a domed front. It is held within the collar made from an upright strip of gold, fixed to the back-plate (no seam can be seen). Below this, the setting is encircled by a strand of gold beaded wire with plain wire above it. The overlapping ends of these wires can be seen inside the suspension loop. The suspension loop is ribbed or corrugated and is 2.7mm wide. It is made…

A rectanglular fragment of possible hack gold, probably of Early Medieval date, AD 450 - 1066. The fragment is broken at both ends and perhaps along one long edge. The remaining side is complete and is slightly wavy but essentially has square corners. The piece is slightly curved in cross-section. The convex face is marked with deep longitudinal scratches. The concave reverse is smooth except for some scratches and cracks near the broken long edge. It is a deep golden colour and is 11.8mm long, 7.1mm wide and 1.4mm thick. 0.74g. Normally a fragment of this nature would be considere…

Description: A bent strip of gold wire. The wire ranges from 1.2mm to 1.7mm in diameter and is sub-circular in cross-section with many flat facets, suggesting that the wire was hand-made by hammering. The ends are both half cut on an angle, and half broken. The wire is wider at one end and gradually tapers along the whole length. Dimensions: The wire is currently bent and twisted, now being 30.9mm long, but if straight would be about 45mm long. It weighs 1.13g. Discussion: The treatment of the ends (chisel-cut and then broken) is characteristic of Viking-age cutting of metal to …

Description: A complete openwork gold pendant, circular with a cross in the centre, with probable ancient repair. The border of the pendant is formed of three concentric rings of beaded wire a maximum of 0.9mm in diameter; these rings of beaded wire have been slightly over-heated, probably during soldering to each other, and they appear a little blurred with some running of gold between the beads. The cross is formed from three or four lengths of slightly thicker beaded wire (maximum diameter 1.1mm) with a single similarly sized gold granule at all four ends and a distinctly larg…

A fragment of a gold ingot of probable Early Medieval date. The fragment is sub rectangular and appears to have been part of a larger ingot, seeming to be half of a slice from an ingot of rounded rectangular section. There are facets on three edges, and the corners are rounded. The two main faces appear to be oblique cuts, but half of the face has a spongy texture and appears to have been broken rather than cut. The remaining small face is also a partial cut and partial break across rough textured metal. The fragment can be compared to 2012 T108 and 2013T276.

When held with the convex edge downwards, the object is curved in cross-section from side to side; the reverse is flatter, but has a C-shaped raised area following the convex edge with a sunken C-shaped centre which is part of the original casting. A 7th-century Early Medieval gold coin; a thrymsa of the York Group (dating from 640 - 660 AD), of a new type classified as type D. The obverse resembles a standing figure facing forward holding a cross in each hand. The reverse has a central cross with flaring limbs and a lozenge in the centre. The cross is within a circle. Instead of a legend, the coin has four cross pommees arranged alternately with pairs of open triangles facing each other (runic 'd') to form an hourglass of figure or eight on its side.

Description: Object made from gold and decorated with filigree. It appears to have originally been globular, or perhaps hemispherical with one face rounded and the rear face flat, but it has now been squashed so that the undecorated rear half has been pushed up into the hollow of the decorated face. One side of the object has been extended to form a long narrow point, probably originally a socket. The filigree decoration consists of both beaded and plain wires. Spindle whorl:A flat lead object with a central perforation and a small dent on one side, most probably a spindle whorl, was found about 4-5 inches away from the ring. A gold 'bulla' pendant of early Anglo-Saxon date. The pendant is circular with a domed centre. The reverse was also domed, but both faces are now dented. A suspension loop is wide and flat and is decorated with two longitudinal grooves, leaving the edges and the centre of the strip raised. The pendant was made from a single piece of sheet metal which was cut into the shape of two circular discs joined by the band now forming the suspension loop. It is likely the grooves on the loop were added next, along with the domes being formed, and then the loop was bent round a form, bringing th…

A gold Early Medieval coin; probably a Merovingian tremissis dating from the 6th or 7th century, 500-700 AD. It has a diameter of 10.92mm, thickness 1.40mm, weight 1.11g. The design seems too large for the flan, so possibly it was copied from a larger coin of c.20mm diameter. There is a border defined by solid lines on one face, containing curved line, straight lines and pellets. The central motif is an unintelligible group of curved lines and pellets. The other face is weakly struck and possibly bears a crude bust and blundered legend.

"Report on a case of possible Treasure from Ainderby Steeple, North Yorkshire (2009 T717) This report concerns what appears to be a tremissis or pseudo-tremissis of the 7th century. The tremissis is a coin type widely issued by the Merovingian Franks in this period, but also produced by the Anglo-Saxons and Frisians. Such coins were produced in fairly good gold at the beginning of the century, but with the gold contained declining as the century progressed, with the gold increasingly replaced by silver. From its appearance, this one probably dates from somewhere fairly early in the ce…

Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate gold content for the ring of 85-88%, a silver content of 6-8%, the remainder being copper; it weighs 14.64 grams. The hoop of the ring consists of five or six plaited rods tapering to the back where they are hammered into a plain, solid section; diameter, 29 mm. This form of Viking-period ring is comparable with a four-strand version in the British Museum found at Soberton, Hampshire, in a pot containing coins of Edward the Confessor, Harold and William I that was deposited c. 1068 and a further exam…

The head tapers to become a neck, which would have acted as a rimmed socket for a slender rod, secured to the terminal with a rivet through the two holes provided on the neck. The base of the object is flat. The dimensions are: length: 31mm; width: 13mm; thickness: 7mm; weight: 4.12g.
