A lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form B1, dating from the early Medieval to Medieval period, about AD 700 - 1200. It is a flat circular disc is a central circular perforation of 9.1mm diameter. The whorl does not appear to be decorated. Diameter 24.5mm, thickness 10mm, weight 36.14g and perforation 9.1mm diameter. This type of whorl is illustrated in Walton Rogers, 2007, Cloth and Clothing in early Anglo-Saxon England, page 25, figure 2.18. Form B1 can date from the Iron Age onwards, but the size of the perforation suggests an Early Medieval to Medieval date.

A fragment of a circular copper alloy plaque, probably a mount from an Early Medieval hanging bow dating from AD 600 - 725. The object is less than a quarter of a probably circular object. It has a chamfered outer edge and the other edges are patinated breaks. The front is decorated in one area with a running spiral formed from three raised lines all springing from the centre, but not meeting. The design is only in shallow relief, and the metal is very flaky and rough. The reverse has an even rougher surface, possibly keying for soldering. The fragment has a length of 32.75mm, a width…

A copper alloy unidentified object, possibly a mount, of Early Medieval to Medieval date, about AD 1000 - 1200. It is in Anglo-Scandinavian zoomorphic Urnes style, but it is not clear what function the object had. It consists of a sub-rectangular tapering bar which terminates in a moulded animal's head, ears flat against the bar, with bulbous eyes and a square snout. Projecting from the beast's snout is a wide openwork sub-circular plate in decorated in Urnes style with oval apertures and faint incised lines. None of the edges appears to b broken, and nor does the square (wider) en…

A silver pendant, perhaps in the shape of an axe, of possible Early Medieval date. The pendant is a sub-triangular piece of metal, with one thinned, convex edge at the the end opposite the loop, and the other sides concave. The object thickens away from the convex "blade" and expends into two prongs which are bent together to form a loop. The prongs are D shaped in section, and taper to a point. The ends overlap. Both faces of the "axe blade" are decorated with darker, slightly recessed spots. These are a little irreegular, but basically follow the outline of the b…

A copper alloy fragmentary object, probably part of a flat buckle frame of later Early Medieval date, probably AD 900 - 1000. It is decorated with Borre style interlace and has a V shaped recess which could be a pin rest. The object is crescent shaped and broken at the ends. It is presumed to be the expanded outer edge from a buckle frame. The V shaped notch is in the centre of the inner edge so would be in the correct position for a pin rest. The design on each side is not symetrical. There is a bar in relief across the pointed end of the V, and a double curved line (probably chip…

A fragment of an Early medieval, probably 8th century, copper alloy circular pinhead or brooch with traces of gilding. Part of the circumference survives along with panels of single-strand, non-zoomorphic, interlace and part of a volute-shaped element. This object is truncated but the curvature of the surviving edge suggests an original diameter of c. 30.0mm. It is likely that the plain, but gilded, circular area with a central hole was one of four such elements, a feature appears on the Witham pins (Wilson, 1964, pl.XVIII, No. 19).The style is similar to SUR-BD3980 and NLM-028751. …
