Early Medieval copper allow strap end of Thomas' Class A Type 2 'Patterned' although, in the case, the face appears undecorated. However, the surfaces have been damaged by corrosion and the decoration may have been lost. The strap end tapers along its length with a sharp reduction in width a a point just above the two hollows representing the eyes of the animal head terminal. At this point the thickness increased from 1.1mm to 2.2mm. Further details of the animal's head were present on the terminal but corrosion makes them difficult to understand. The main panel was defined by finely …

Fragment of a Early Medieval copper alloy strap end being the animal head terminal. Two bulbous eyes are emphasised by deep- set notches either side of them. The animal's up-turned nose is separated from the eyes by a low moulding. The back is plain. Condition good but varnished. Length 14.4mm, Width 7.8mm, Thickness 3.8mm, Mass 1.95g. Some thought has been given as to whether or not this fragment represents part of an early cruciform brooch (like FAKL-F2B846) or if it was part of a strap end (like FAKL-852435). On balance the latter interpretaion seems most likley.

Fragment of a Middle Saxon copper alloy strap end, probably of Thomas' Class A. Only part of the upper leaf of the bifurcation survives, this is decorated with a knot motif like that seen on Thomas' Fig. 1.1. This metal has been cut back so that the motif is raised above the surface. The fragment has curved sides and a denticulate end, with two notches. Through it are two, 2.5mm diameter holes which were drilled from the front Condition good. Length 14.3mm, Width 16.2mm, Thickness 1.6mm, Mass 1.36g

Remains of a Middle Saxon copper alloy strap end, probably of Thomas' Class A but its poor preservation makes any further classification impossible. The strap end was lanceolat but the decoration has been lost to corrosion. At one end part of the bifurcation survives and the other end is thickened in the manner typical of animal head terminals. Condition poor. Length 33.3mm, Width 9.3mm, Thickness 2.6/1.5mm, Mass 2.53g

Early Medieval, copper alloy strap end, which does not fit into Thomas's classification but is best seen as a variant of his Class A. The body is oval, but from it projects a D-sectioned bar around which are two transverse mouldings. On the body is a panel of niello inlay. Trewhiddle style decoration consists of an animal, facing towards the strap end's split but with its head turned back over its shoulder. Some niello survives. Only one rivet was used, set within a plain rounded area; there are two indents on the upper edge of the split end. Condition good but some detail is obscured…

Early Medieval, copper alloy strap end of Thomas' Class A Type 2, with geometric decoration and possible inlay. The strap end is lanceolate with a simplified animal head terminal made up of four facets representing the forehead and nose. The decorative panel follows the curving shape of the strap end and bears a close-set pattern of incised crossing lines making up a net-like design. These lines are inlaid with a white substance which appears soft. It is not soil and is notably absent from the surviving slot of the split end, again suggesting that it is a feature of the strap ends dec…

Early Medieval, cast copper alloy strap end of Thomas' Class A, probably Type 1, details of the Trewhiddle style decoration having been lost to corrosion. The body of the strap end is waisted, narrowing beneath the split end. Below this is an oval panel, separated from the split end by an incised, curved, line. On the oval panel is a recessed area that would have held the decoration, it appears to retain traces of a white substance (see FAKL-B26DC2). Early Medieval strap end, cast copper alloy with niello inlay. Decoration chisel cut rather than cast and the incised lines inlaid with niello, which is missing from some areas. Down the centre of the strap end is what appears to be a simplified version of a Borre ring chain. This is flanked by two elongaged oval panels below which are what look like scroll-ended tendril. Further tendrils for the eye-brows. The animal head terminal is boldly executed with raised eyes set within recess areas, each eye containing a dot. Between the eyes is a bar which extends down to form the nose. At t…

Early Medieval, cast copper alloy strap end of Thomas' Class B Type 1, characterised by a zoomorhic terminal and transverse grooving. The animal's head is highly stylised and represented by two notches on each side of the head which define the eyes. The transverse grooving is irregular and extends for around 60% of the length of the strap end, above which is the split end. This is damaged but two, 2.4mm holes can be seen, separated by two notches. The incised decoration contains traces of a crystaline substance which is likely to be enamel. Condition poor and corroded, the strap end i…
