Fragment of a copper alloy penannular Celtic-style brooch with a zoomorphic terminal dating to the 6th-7th century AD.The terminal is sub-triangular in plan tapering to a broken edge at the start of the hoop.On the back of the terminal there is a circular indentation which may have traces of silver or tinning.The upper surface of the terminal has relief decoration comprising a central ring around the outside of which are three smaller rings (evenly spaced) joined by relief arcs.It is possible that the cells these shape create could have been filled with coloured glass or enamel.However…

A complete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) silver sceat, primary phase series C2 dating c.700-10. (John Naylor, pers.comm). The obverse has a radiate bust facing right facing a Runic inscription TEPA before. The reverse has a beaded TOTII standard with a cross pattée at each side, crosses at each corner of standard and an annulet at centre. Possible terminal from a penannular brooch of Early Medieval date (410-849). The terminal is circular with the broken stub of the hoop on one side.The object is plain and undecorated on the reverse, but the obverse has a chip-carved interlaced design enclosed within two raised circles - the inner circle being plain; the outer circle being segmented. The broken stub is also decorated with two raised lines either side of a short segmented line that tapers to a point close to the break. A similar object is recorded on the database, see NMGW-A1B4C5.
