Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy and iron object, probably dating to the early emdieval period (c.AD450-550).
The object is broadly cruciform in shape, with three bulbous terminals or lobes and a clear break along the bottom edge. At the centre is what appears to be a rivet. It is not clear how much of the shape of the object is due to iron corrosion and thus what the true form would be.
Dimensions: 7.34g.
The purpose, and thus the identification of the object is also unclear. However, as it was found in association with a number of other early medieval objects (see note below) it is like…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy cruciform brooch dating to the early medieval period (AD525-570).
The brooch is broken in two parts and is almost complete except for a small portion of the headplate and most of the pin on the reverse. The sub-square headplate (39.2mm x 39.4mm) has a distinct rectangular plate (24.2mm x 30mm) set in relief at its centre, the bottom edge of this rectangle meeting the top of the bow. The upper face of this rectangle appears to have traces of indistinct decoration, an element of which may be several incised lines. Contained within is a further, slightly less upstanding re…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy early-medieval small-long brooch (c.AD450-550).
Only the head-plate of the brooch survives, comprising central rectangular panel with two crescentic knops projecting from each side. There appears to be an old break along the top edge, and there is also a break at the base of the head plate where a small amount of the bow projects. None of the original surface of the brooch survives and no trace of any decoration can be seen. The reverse of the head plate retains parts of the broken attachment loop for the pin. The brooch has a mid br…

Obverse: Bust right(?) [...]N[...] (note N reversed)
Reverse: central cross [...]ONIV[...]
The broken edges of the coin appear quite corroded and appear to indicate the coin has a base metal core, and is thus a copy or contemporary imitation.

Description: A complete gold Latin cross pendant, with runic inscription, dating to the early medieval period (c.AD700-900).
The solid gold cross is of simple form: the long arm is uppermost, with a crude ‘repair’ piercing at the apex; the slight concavity along the upper edge is indicative of a previous worn piercing or attachment, and the terminal has been diagonally filed to ‘finish’ this arm following the repair. Almost the entire length of the arm is filled with an inscription comprising six runes; two parallel scratches to the right of the piercing appear…
