Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy, gold leaf and garnet Early Anglo-Saxon zoomorphic shield mount of Dickinson and Harke's group C (figural appliques usually of gilt bronze in the shape of fish or other animals), dating c. 500-600 AD. In plan the mount would probably have taken the form of a fish or aquatic creature: the 'head' end is broken away, but the rest of the object is preserved intact. The main body of the object is oval in plan, with a raised elongated oval section at its midpoint (thus creating a 'tiered' efect) containing three recessed cells that appear to retain the residu…

The knob consists a central sub-rectangular panel depicting an anthropomorphic mask on its upper surface with prominent pelleted eyes, heavy brows and an elongated nose. Each side of the knob below the nose than has a further curved projecting element, together forming the moustache of the human face. Each curves around a sub-circular aperture. The curving elements individually take the form of a beaked pre…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy fragment originating from a strap end probably belonging to Thomas' type A4-5, dating to the Early Medieval period- c. 750-900 AD. Only the terminal end survives, the rest of the object apparently missing in a neat truncation. The former is zoomorphic, taking the form of a bat-like animal with a tapered snout, bulging ears and large lenticular ears-above which are a pair of scrolled mouldings presumably marking the lower border of the central cells (now missing). The reverse of the strap-end is stepped, its upper edge demonstrating a ferrous corrosion …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap end dating to the late Early Medieval period, c. 900-1100, corresponding to Thomas' E1b, 'tongue shaped strap ends depicting pure foliate designs'. Only the upper portion of the strap end survives, the midsection and terminal broken away in an irregular truncation showing active corrosion products. The upper edge of the strap end is bifurcated for accomodating the original strap, the remnants of two iron rivets and associated mineralised organic (?) remains still visible. Directly below this is a slightly recessed area where Winchester-style decor…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy possible mount or fitting possibly dating to the Early-Medieval period, c. 410-1066 AD. It is banjo-shaped in plan view, with a truncated upper edge where part of the object has broken away. Running down the midpoint of the object are two longitudinal grooves, extending from both edges and only broken by the presence of a small circular aperture (for a rivet?) which is visible towards the lower edge of the object. Each rounded lobe on the side of the object (hence its 'banjo' like appearance) demonstrates a single stamped ring-dot motif. Preserved in fa…

One arm and the midsection survive intact, the opposing arm missing in an old break. Preserved in fair condition with the characteristic reddish brown patina usually found on metalwork of this period, it survives to …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap end of Thomas' class E, dating c. 900-1100. Originally the strap end would have been tongue shaped in plan, though now the terminal end is missing in old damage and it subsequently is rectangular in form. Despite this damage, the remainder of the object is preserved relatively intact. The upper edge of the strap end is bifurcated, creating a gap into which the original strap would have been fitted- and subsequently secured together at each corner by means of a single circular-sectioned copper-alloy rivet. It demonstrates a sub-circular body that tapers at its back edge to form a thinned hook, the lower portion of which is missing in old damage. The body itself demonstrates seven punched decorative ring-dot motifs on its upper surface, arranged 3/3/1. Each of these demonstrates a small aperture at its midpoint, though those on the left hand and right hand motifs on the front row are enlarged and clearly designed to function as sewing holes. Pre…
