Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Distal terminal-end fragment of a copper alloy early Saxon girdle hanger. A significant part of the central lower shank survives, flanked by a complete prong to one side, with the formerly symmetrical stub on the other side which is now entirely missing from an old break. The undamaged prong terminates in an outward canted rounded end. One face of the fragment has the entire border decorated with continuous rows of spaced punched dots. The rear face is undecorated. Brown patina over most of the surface. Circa AD460-550. Extant length 46mm, thick…

Distal terminal-end fragment of a copper alloy early Saxon girdle hanger. A small part of the central lower shank survives, flanked by a complete prong to one side, and a broken formerly symmetrical stub on the other. The complete lingulate-shaped prong has a surviving outward projecting tab positioned just short of its end. The basal terminal edge of the hanger spanning the width across both prongs has three spaced crenels. One face of the fragment has a decorated border consisting of irregularly spaced lines of punched dots and ring-a…

Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A very worn, cast copper alloy late Early Medieval zoomorphic stirrup terminal, of the Anglo-Scandinavian period. The upper part of the terminal is a hollow U-shaped triangle, one return of which is missing from an old worn break. The U-section tapers to an internal ledge on which the iron footrest of the stirrup would have been located and soldered. An internal cusp leads to a solid triangular projection the outside face of which is moulded, probably representing a zoomorphic beast's head, but is now far too worn and eroded to be resolvable as such. The form of…

Incomplete catch-piece from a cast copper-alloy sleeve clasp of Hines form B12, dating to the Early Medieval period, c. 450-600 AD. It is broken across the middle catch slot and represents about half of the complete object. The bar is laterally extended by the broken slot into a trapezoidal shape, continuing via three groups of transversely grooved, waisted rectangles to a square terminal end with a T-shaped sewing projection.  Extant length 26mm, width 14.5mm, weight 2.88g

Fragment of a copper alloy early Saxon sleeve clasp of Hines type B12. The square terminal end of the bar survives, with the narrowed and tightly cross-banded decorated strip below. The fragment is fractured transversely across the base of the banding and the centre of the adjoining attachment loop. This fragmented example falls into Hines’ B12 category, very similar in form to one illustrated in Hines 1993: 47, fig. 90a. Related and more complete examples are recorded on the PAS database under LEIC-C9DCA0 and NLM-F3880E. Circa AD&nbs…

Incomplete Thomas Class E, type 4, Anglo Scandinavian strap end. Rectangular with a recessed attachment end, with both end corners missing, having fractured across the holes for the attachment rivets. The front face is decorated in heavy relief with an insular Borre style ‘vertebral ring-chain’ motif running down the centre. The decoration appears to terminate prematurely at the end, where although the metal is regular and symmetrical in form it is probably broken and originally continued further, possibly into a zoomorphic head.…

Incomplete copper alloy early Saxon cast Cruciform brooch. The headplate, knob/s, pin, and spring are all missing, but otherwise, the brooch is complete. The steeply arched bow widens slightly in the centre, and has a medial arris along its length,  with a transverse moulded triangular decorative bar feature at either end. The lower bow transitions into the panel of the upper foot, with the perpendicular catchplate on the reverse (when viewed from the reverse, the catchplate curls to the left). The front of the panel …

Fragment of solid copper alloy side knob from an early Saxon cruciform brooch. Description: Fragment of a gilded silver Middle Saxon pin head. Flat and originally circular, around  half survives; the breaks are patinated but not very worn. A small rectangular tab, the same thickness as the rest of the head, projects from the side and in the centre of this another rectangular-section projection emerges and is quickly broken; this is the remains of the shaft. The front of the pin head is decorated in low relief with a cross made up of a narrow reserved undecorated strip, extending to a circular ridged border. Oddly, the cross arm that lead…

Copper alloy chip-carved and gilded early Saxon mount, probably from horse harness. The body is flat and pelta-shaped (sometimes referred to as axe-shaped) with one of the side-tips from the crescentic end tips missing from an old break. The front face is bordered and filled with interlacing scrolls of triple strand style II ribbon decoration. It is possible that in the out-curving corners of the crescent end, the scrolls resolve into eye shaped features, perhaps as serpent or birds heads which are recurring icons on such mounts. Unfortunately this area of the mount is the most degrad…

Fragment of a gilded copper alloy Early Saxon chip-carved sleeve clasp. The fragment is lingulate in plan, thin (1.2mm), and slightly curved in both flat dimensions. All edges are broken, one of which bisects a circular attachment hole. The chip-carved decoration consists of a square or rectangular panel that probably bordered the clasp, from which there are two branching scrolls (only a small part of the second one remains) with parallel scrolling strands within, that terminate at the centre in an animal head motif, possibly a bird. In the triangular spandrel between the two scrolls …

Corroded Early Medieval chip-carved copper alloy octofoil mount, possibly from harness or furniture. The foils at the four cardinal points are larger than the intermediate diagonal foils. See SUR-D59AA0 for a similar shaped mount. There is a round rivet hole at the tip of each cardinal foil and another in the centre of the mount, all of which have traces of iron corrosion present. The surface decoration is very intricate but unfortunately the pattern detail is masked by extensive degradation of the metal surface, making resolving the symmetry and establishing a date by d…

Incomplete copper alloy early Saxon small long brooch. Spring and pin mechanism are missing and the headplate and foot eroded at the extremities. The tapering bow has an undecorated slight arris and a sub-rectangular cross-sectioned moulding at the junction of both headplate and foot. Fragment of a flimsy thin sheet copper alloy probable Saxon hooked tag. Probably originally a sub-triangular body shape (Read class A) but now with the shoulders eroded through damage, possibly around attachment holes. A hole in the centre of the body remains complete, surrounding which, concentric ringed decoration can be seen. The body tapers sharply towards the bottom end to such an extent that the hooked end has disintegrated, and is no longer extant. See Read, B, Hooks Clasps and Eyes (2008) p.7-37 for similar examples. Circa 7th-10th century.

Fragment of small copper-alloy early Saxon bow brooch. The fragment consists of a much broken undecorated flat head plate with single longitudinally aligned pin lug on the reverse. The lug has broken across the central circular hole; no trace of iron can be seen around the lug. A fragment of incurved edge survives on the headplate, next to the top of the bow; from one edge of the headplate the bow rises abruptly in a curve, but terminates quickly at an old transverse break. The fragment is likely to be from a small long brooch dating to c. 450-550 AD.
